TransParent Cables vs. Others When I had my Audio Research LS25, ARC VT100MKII, Levinson front end and Merlin VSM-SE speakers, I tried some Transparent cables. They made my system sound lifeless -- uninvolving. To my ears, the stuff is a blatant -- and very expensive -- tone c...
Vandersteen 3A Sig vs. Meadowlark Osprey Bigtee: The majority of us rely at least a little on other people's opinions -- some of those in the magazines and some of those we read here. You can tell a lot about someone's listening preferences by looking at their system and their points of ...
Vandersteen 3A Sig vs. Meadowlark Osprey Bigtee: The Osprey is a brand new speaker. I'm thinking it might be better than the previous Meadowlark speakers, which didn't impress me all that much.As for listening to speakers in the same environment, that's very rarely possible. Almost never...
Vandersteen 3A Sig vs. Meadowlark Osprey Sdcampbell: I can tell you've talked to Richard Vandersteen. Actually, so have I (and 99 percent of audiophiles), and I've owned the 2Ci and 3A -- along with about a dozen other high-end speakers, so I'm not new to this game. I'm also a fan of pha...

Advice on power conditioner Regarding the Richard Gray units, I had three of them. They strangled my amp. My Pass X350 and my Rowland Model 10 sounded like tiny triodes. When my A/C kicked on, the 60-watt lamp I had plugged into one of the units dimmed. So much for incredibl...
Advice on power conditioner I'm with Sean on this one. Or you can get a new Monster Cable HTS-1000 or HTS-2000 for $149 and $199 (retail -- you can do better), respectively. They're hard to beat for the money -- and they're better than the Chang. At least they were in my sys...
Alternatives to Dunlavy speakers? Brauser: I agree completely. Accuracy isn't subjective. Some audiophiles might prefer various colorations, but the notion that accuracy is open to personal interpretation and can't be measured in speakers is sheer foolishness. So while there are n...
Advice on replacing Vandersteen 2's I agree with Lolo. The Totem Hawks would offer a lot for the money, although they're not very efficient. Or he might consider a pair of Paradigm Studio 60v2's, which offer a very lively presentation but aren't the most refined speakers in the world.
What's wrong with Thiel? Zaikesman makes several fine arguments, some of which, however, can be refuted rather easily. First, I have in fact heard many of the Thiel speakers, including the CS6 . The local high-end shop is a Thiel dealer. Also, let me hasten to say that I'...
What's wrong with Thiel? Since no one has mentioned this, I figured I'd toss it out and read the responses.Looking back a few years at a Stereophile review of the Thiel CS6 (March 1998), Stereophile reports problems with its first pair of speakers, confirmed by Jim Thiel....
Quad 988 / 989 reliability ?? The Hififarm post comes from someone who just two years ago -- before he and IAG America, the Quad importer, had a falling out -- told me that any reviewer worth his salt had a pair of Quads on hand. He said the Quads 988s and 989s were far better...
Sub-woofers to go with Quad 988 / 989 ? Rhyno: I owned the Merlins VSM-SEs and used a REL Stadium II with them. The sound was seamless and gorgeous.Have you actually heard a REL set up correctly? And, no, bass doesn't image. You cannot tell where frequencies in the 20-60 Hertz range ori...
Sub-woofers to go with Quad 988 / 989 ? I'm using a REL Stadium III. It works great with the Quad 988s, at least. The REL subs integrate well, and have power and finesse. Actually, though, in many rooms, you won't need a sub at all -- unless you just want to rattle floors and walls.
Quad 988 / 989 reliability ?? Detlof: The bubbling noise that mysteriously moves from one channel to the other could also mean there's a problem with one of the components upstream. It's worth checking out at least. Also, before commending HIFI Farm for having so much integrit... |
