FOR SECONDARY LISTNING IS THERE A REASONABLE DA FOR A 5 DISC PLAYER THAT WILL ALLOW REASONABLE LISTNING WITH VERY GOOD SPEAKERS AND AMP

Hi Hillyg; I see that there are several Adcom 600 DACs now listed here on Audiogon for $200. to 250. The GDA was a Stereophile Class C DAC in its day, and it is still a very good DAC-- and a good value. I used the Adcom 600 for a couple of years with a Sony CA9ES (5 CD carosel), Toslink out and it made a for a significant improvement in music quality/character. Also get a good Toslink cable-- I used Kimber at $50. Good Hunting. Craig.
My Musical Fidelity X-Dac sounds great, and has HDCD. I just got the upgrade power supply for it, recently. I use it with the Kimber Toslink cable, and a 6 year old Sony 5 disc changer. Of course, I have billion dollar equipment in my "primary" system...muh hah hah hah hah.
The price of DACs are falling further every week. At the current rate of price decline, six months from now, people will pay you to take their DACs. Seriously, why go for a reasonable DAC. For less than $1,500 you can get, if not a great unit, at least a really good one. A few months back I was in the same situation you are now. I found a SF 1 MkII at a local dealer for $800. The same unit now can probably be had for $500+. If I had to do it over again today, I'd probably pay more and go for a SF 2 MkII or a Theta III. Neither is current state of the art, but either one is high quality unit that would not hold back any reasonable secondary system.
