Did I Get the Wrong Intel NUC?
I wanted to try my hand at using a NUC to load Roon’s ROCK. I watched a few videos and picked up a NUC 11PAHi7 with 16GB of RAM and 500GB of SSD, since it was on sale.
But, upon further research, it looks like I picked the wrong one as this unit doesn’t have a M.2 SSD and it also comes with Windows. I was planning on using this NUC for Roon, only.
So before I return it and get a bareboned NUC with the proper SSD, wanted to ask the folks here if that’s the right call. I won’t put anything on the internal SSD, as my music is stored on an external drive attached via USB.
What do you suggest?

Does it come with a SATA SSD? If so, that's probably enough.
You can also buy an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD for fairly cheap now. For example, the Samsung 980 Pro is only $89 for 1 TB. That should be plenty fast.
It's no big deal if it comes with Windows - it looks like installing ROCK will just overwrite everything on the drive anyway. I would save the license key in case you need to activate Windows in the future (for example, if you decide to sell the hardware). |
+1 @yage You might not get the sale price again. What is the drive in this? HDD? If it is a SSD, but not M.2, check with other Roon users and see if it makes that much of a difference. |
