Why no trading?

With all of the buying and selling of members who just want to try something new and different, I am wondering why more people don't just trade items? I realize it would take just the right deal but I can't recall seeing an ad for trading of an item. What's your thoughts on this?

Audiogon doesn't make a provision for trading. I think it was considered at one time but it has never happened. I guess there is nothing in it for them so they aren't interested. I've had a few transactions turn into trades with pretty good results.
I would love to trade my VPI-HW19mkII for a Goldmund reference table but so far no takers.
There are times when someone will either use the words " will consider trades" in either his ad heading or the ad body. I have traded items before and both parties were happy afterwards. You'll also notice that some ads will specifically state, " No trades, please."
I also have seen ads that use the words "trades considered". I have also made trades here on AudiogoN. It is very hard to do though, as finding just the 'right deal' is tough enough when just money is involved, adding more variables only makes it tougher.

Cheers,
John
You radically, and I mean radically, decrease the likelihood of a deal when you are looking for a trade. The odds of you having what the other guy wants and him having exactly what you want are pretty thin. That's not to say impossible, but the force is typically not with you.

While there are audio enthusiasts who would be happy to trade for a wide variety of things just to say "oh yeah, I had one of those for a while..." most of us get very specific ideas about the item we're looking for when we're changing or upgrading.

You also have the problem of how to handle disparities in value. The other fellow has what you want and you have what he wants, but he wants an even trade and you want $500 on top of trade. In a normal cash sale each of you just move on to the next seller who has what you want. In a trade, trying to get a new deal with someone else has just compounded already poor odds.

Using money as the vehicle in the selling process eliminates all of those issues. Sellers get a vastly wider audience and buyers find it easier to get exactly what they want.

In short, this is all basic economics. It is why money was invented in the first place.
I'd trade our two cats for Natalie Portman but she doesn't even respond to my email.

Guess I need to run an ad here at Audiogon.
Albert- Natalie's with me- and I already have a cat and 3 dogs.

I will, however, trade my sister for your speakers.

How old is your sister? (Or better yet, from Blues Brothers movie)

Jake: How much for the little girl? The women? How much for the women?

Customer: What?

Jake: Your women. I want to buy your women. The little girl, your daughters. Sell them to me. Sell me your children!

I laughed so hard the first time I saw this movie I almost choked.
Albert;

My sister's 46, but here's the good news- she's a dead ringer for Ethel Merman! I don't wanna make the swap until after Christmas though, cause she's sending me some home made cookies :)
My sister looks like Imagene Coca. I'll trade one Ethel Merman for one Imagene Coca.
Albert, why settle for Ethel or Imagene when you can get the virtual experience of Natalie right over your phone lines whenever you want her?! It's the very latest from our favorite Ex-NASA tweak-meister...yep, you guessed it, the "Teleportman"! Have your credit card ready!

Marco
Ethel was cute, just look at this: http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Mptv/1303/7802_0009.jpg

and 46 is GREAT age for chicks!

I concur, the classic line of that movie and one I have used on many humerous occasions over the years. Glad to see I am not the only person. For some reason reminds of the amplifier line from Spinal tap - the amp that goes to 11.

You know, when I first saw the beginning to this thread, I was amazed there were this many replies until I got to about the middle. I guess boredom will do that to you. Dan

Is that an early "The Professional," Natalie Teleportman tweak or a later version?
Thanks for all of the funny replies. This thread turned out better than I expected!

No, this is the "Closer" Teleportman. You're thinking of the "Telepedoportman" (Beautiful Girls/The Professional) which costs extra. Get caught doing the Telepedoportman and you'll be doing a dime at Texarkana hoping to god the other cons don't catch wind of why you're in there.

Hey Marco, I didn't make that movie, I just watched it.

OK, I admit I watched it 241 times and then bought both DVD versions.

Although it's true the silver's sluffing off the DVD's, I was just fascinated with the film work and lighting, I was not really looking at Natalie.

OK, I looked at Natalie a little but only to make sure I didn't miss any of her dialogue, my center channel is not set up perfectly.

You believe me don't you?
Albert, you need to find a local chapter of "Friends of Leon" and get yourself to a meeting! That film also has a great pre-Hollywood performance by Gary Oldman...over the top!
