Ok, lets not go there then. Ill approach from another angle. Lets say we have a good cart like the XV-1s, I believe will match with a medium mass arm from its 8x10Dyne, if we have a heavy arm, say 30g like the 66s, wouldnt the performance be worse than in a less "rigid" but lighter arm? |
Those are very nice arms but Im thinking of Venomous prices like twelve Grand and more. |
Buconero and Syntax I agree with you, manufacture dont seem to be high. And the Physics shouldnt have evolved as much as electronics so old sound concepts should still aply. I just dont understand why nobody starts to manufacture the old(not all of them but the good ones) arms again? |
I thought that thread was a delight to read but I was thinking along the lines that some manufacturer was not so well represented and therefore the thread was "lost"?
D. in your four points you mention "dynamic balanced design" and "very rigid construction". Would you say the Schroder arm exhibits these traits? |
Cerrot, always nice with a nice watch although I think there more of a status item than a tonearm. I think a tonearm can be better or worse at reproducing sound than a watch at showing time.
My take is that the Physics was available many years ago and companies like Fidelity Research knew them and had big enough manufacturing runs to keep the price down, but why dont they produce those excellent arms again? |
Axel, the naming must be pure coincident:-) |
D what in your opinion constitutes a good tonearm? |
But why is the 66s six times the price of a 64s? If the 64s is not far behind it must be a bargain? |
Halcro, do you think that the efforts small companies bring to the scene with advanced computer analysis of TTs outweighs the big money that big corporations like Technics could put into the development long ago although with less elaborate computer analysis. My guess is that the electronics play a lesser role in TTs compared to CDs and that the physics that still govern the biggest part of the design has been available for quite a while? |
D in a world without the 64 and 66s what would you use? |
Nandric, do you think the Reed can compete with the dynamically balanced tonearms that Dertonarm mention? |
D. thanks for the digress, Im leaning against a XV1s so I will investigate the mentioned arms. Are you using your own TT or are you running a commercially available unit? |
Can you tell me a little bit more about the air-cushion? So I guess your final assault will be something similar along the lines of heavy platter belt drive with very elaborate damping system? |
Raul, I did not have the answer I was looking for when I started this thread. The inputs I had then was I was searching for a good arm for the XV1s, you had recommended the AT1503III/IV and someone else the "Grand", theres a pretty big price discrepancy there. Also the other famous arms, the 507II, the 8c, the VIIU, the SQ all seems to be around or below 6k not to mention all the old famous Japanese, 64s/66s, 506, EA-10 etc.
So thanks to all, I think this thread is getting real interesting, different opinions just makes things more interesting, just this is not super serious politics. |
Dertonarm, nothing but clear answers thanks. Good suggestion with 10-20 common records!
I read one reviewer that was not very impressed(to say the least) with the Walker to SP10 move?
And with huge danger Im now opening up pandoras box and asking about the combo of FR7/FR66/XF1 is there a better step-up out there? |
So D. for the final piece of the puzzle what phono stage do you use with the FR-7f? Thanks Pär |
Always worth a lot thanks for taking the time to answer, would you consider building a unit? |
Raul,
the reason you dont see any analog items is I dont have a complete rig up and running yet but Im trying to put together something sensible to see if it can compete with my digital. So far I have 1 TT, 1 cart and 2 phono stages. |
Atmasphere, its not a necessity but the two I own at the moment are single ended, one tubed one ss. Anything particular in mind? |
Is it the case with dynamic arms that the vertical force is closer to the turret and therefore there will be less sideways/twirling force and this force is parallel with the force on the needle? |
Atmasphere, 20 years thats impressive not a lot lasts that long in this hobby. Problem for me is I have only single ended input on my amp and the MP1/MP3 seems to have only balanced output. Another thing is I wasnt really looking for a line amp but I see that my dealer has both the MP1 and MP3 so I might give them a listen. Is it possible to only use the phono stage? |
Axel, my thought was that looking at these pics for example http://www.thomas-schick.com/FR64.htm that the spring is in the turret so there will be no moment like the counterweight has force times the distance away from the turret? Maybe this is not important at all Im just thinking high school mechanics with force arrows. |
Yes thats true but I was using the picture to argue that the spring would result in zero moment as opposed to the static which uses the CW to hold the needle down, but as I said dont know if this is important. |
Raul,
are you building a tonearm yourself and if so could you shortly elaborate on the design goals/route you have chosen? Tks Pär |
Oh this gets better and better, two new fantastic arms to choose from, my TT can mount two....
And now the ten thousand dollar question, whats the price of those arms Raul and Dertonarm? |
Yes thats the big problem, its always the tradeof between making money and having "street cred"/philantrophy. Anything that is slightly better than the previous best can always command a higher price but its also a cheap advertising trick raising your price up to the top and signaling Im the alpha male and thereby getting a head start. Its a lot more fun charging a lower price and still getting the respect you deserve for having the best(if a best can be established) product.
So as I said be real interesting to see where you two put your prices. |
Dertonarm, would you build the phonostage as well to have the full chain? I think there is another one out there... |
Any idea on the pricing Raul? Just approximately? |
Syntax, you can make that man a great favour by letting us all know. |
Dertonarm, thank you very much for the invitation, always wanted to see Munich. I spent one summer working in Koblenz actually. |
Well, then you have to charge 20k for your tonearm to afford all those women:) If you ever want to meet the other 10 you can always visit here again youre most welcome. |
Self-financing youre so right! If you come Ill show you the good restaurants, and what really good digital sounds like:) Cheers |
Come on guys, what woman do You have, isnt she the best? |
Raul, I applaude people that try to realize a vision! Getting things finished, IMHO, takes calculated/projected time times 3. So hopefully your arm will be out soon and I get to hear it. My analog voyage has just begun and I have yet to hear anything that can approach the rest of my system. So regards and enjoy life:-) |
Mark, whats you favorite Tonearm of choice and why have you chosen it? |
