Another that came in the mail today. I’ve been hunting for a reasonable price on this two CD set, and finally snagged one from the UK. BUT, interestingly enough, I have been waiting on this to arrive for over 6 weeks, purchased through eBay. Last week contacted the seller about the status....they asked me to wait an additional 72 hours for it to arrive, and I did....well, without even enquiring further, eBay stepped in, and as the seller could not provide them with a tracking number, refunded me for the purchase a couple days ago. And what do you know, it arrived today 😁

Along with all the LP’s I purchased via Discogs, one of my favorite sellers had a 6 CD box set of all Vaughan Williams symphonies and other compositions for a great price, so picked it up. I’m always drawn to box sets. I must say, although I have a smattering of Williams pieces throughout my collection, this is a very nice set, and playing it all from CD1-CD6 in chronological order has been very interesting and enjoyable. Williams is like no other composer, and you never quite know what you will get next.
All are conducted by Leonard Slatkin with the Philharmonia Orchestra. All very nicely recorded, released in 1993 on RCA Victor Red Seal. All DDD.
Currently listening to Symphonies 5 & 6

@uberwaltz
Agreed. Not sure why, but my tapes are always an afterthought, but I do have a decent collection from back in the day, and some are incredibly good. As example, many of the Jazz I have on tape were made and mastered really well, like the ones I played last night. Incredible sound really, and great dynamics. The More ‘pop’ or ‘rock’ stuff seem to be more the ‘hit and miss’ ones. My thinking is they were released to an audience that they knew wouldn’t notice the lack of quality, as the source wasn’t typically for critical listening anyway. So were just ‘thrown out there’ to pop in a crappy system. Sometimes.
Cassettes do get a bad rap too often, but if you obtain a good well mastered for cassette tape, they can rival the vinyl I have with a great true natural analog sound. |
