Eubie Blake-The Eighty Six Years Of Eubie Blake-Side 3

Neil Diamond-The Jazz Singer Side 2

Randy Sabien Jazz Quintet-In A Fog Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Vern Gosdin-Chiseled In Stone Side 2

Diamond/McCartney and Gosdin were well above average in SQ. The SQ champ tonight goes to Randy Sabien. If you don’t find Shirley Bassey overly bombastic her version of New York State Of Mind might appeal to you.

@big_greg

Thx! I appreciate your comments. When On Every Street was released(91’) the AOR station(WRIF) only played "Heavy Fuel" which I didn’t like. Thirty years have past, it is time to give the entire album a listen.

@big_greg

Noticed you played Alchemy by Dire Straits last night. How would you rate the performance and sound quality? Alchemy and On Every Street are the Dire Straits recordings missing on cd or vinyl in my collection.

@reubent

Yes it is! Forgot how good "Eyes Of Silver" is. This is one of a few bands where its very difficult to pick a favorite album or even song.

Poco-A Good Feelin' To Know Side 1

Emmy Lou Harris-Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Steven Stills-Live Acoustic Side

The Marshall Tucker Band-Together Forever Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Peter, Paul And Mary-Late Again Side 1

Hank Williams JR.-Whiskey Bent And Hell Bound Side 1

The Doobie Brothers-What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Oak Ridge Boys-Greatest Hits 2 Side 2

Turned out to be an "Americana" music night. Marshall Tucker Band gets the SQ crown tonight which was mastered by Bernie Grundman. "Vices" is also excellent in SQ my thrift store (early pressing) copy needs upgrading.

Teddy Pendergrass-Life Is A Song Worth Singing-Side 1

Margie Adam-Songwriter(Pleiades Records HB2747} Side 1

John Cougar-Nothin' Matters And What If It Did Side 1

Joan Sprung-'Ballads And Butterflies"(Folk-Legacy Records FSI-60) Side 2

Gene Watson-Between This Time & The Next Time Side 1

Peter Frampton-Where I Should Be Side 1

Miriam Makeba-Sangoma Side 1 SQ Audiophile

The Charlie Daniels Band-Simple Man Side 2

Only 1 recording made Audiophile status tonight. If you have room in your collection for a female version of "Graceland" Miriam Makeba delivers a harder core version with Audiophile sonics.

@mammothguy54

Just sent you info regarding the Lou Rawls pressing. Will be back tonight. Just getting my play list ready. i will spin a couple obscure recordings tonight.

Lou Rawls-All Things in Time Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Judas Priest-Unleased In The East Side 2

Van Morrison & The Chieftains-Irish Heartbeat Side B SQ Audiophile

Gary Morris-Plain Brown Wrapper Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Bryd/Kessel/Ellis-Great Guitars At The Winery(CJ-131) Side 1

Sea Level-Ball Room Side 2 SQ Audiophile

The Bernie Leadon/Michael Georgiades Band-Natural Progressions Side 2 SQ*

Frank Sinatra-Come Fly With Me(Capitol SW 920) Side 1

All recordings were above average regarding SQ. Unexpectedly Concord Jazz was the weakest recording maybe due to the live recording. *Leadon/Georgiades would have the SQ crown but the vocals were to recessed. The SQ champ tonight goes to Lou Rawls. Everything was in balance and the vocal/instrument separation was excellent.

Rachmaninoff-Symphony No.2(MS 6110) Side 1+2 SQ Audiophile

Anne Murray-Talk It Over In The Morning Side 1

Brenda Russell-ST Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Lynyrd Skynyrd-Second Helping Side 1

ABBA-Greatest Hits Vol,2  Side 2

A Taste Of Jazz-(VA) CJ-93 Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Joe Walsh-"But Seriously, Folks..." Side 1

Peter Sprague-Musica Del Mar(CJ-237) Side 2 SQ Audiophile

4 recordings with Audiophile SQ makes for an enjoyable night even if the power quality tonight was subpar. I would have to give Rachmaninoff the SQ crown tonight, I even played both sides! It was the first album played and was at least the equal of the 3 other Audiophile records, as the power quality slowly improved.

Mtume-You, Me And He Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Asia-ST Side 1

Sue Raney-Ridin' High Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Santana-Shango Side 2

Kiri Te Kanawa-Potrait Of Kiri Te Kanawa Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Stevie Ray Vaughn-Couldn't Stand The Weather Side 2 SQ*

Queen-A Day At The Races Side 1

Delia Bell-ST Side 2

Another well balanced night playing different genres. All recordings were above average regarding SQ. Asia had the weakest SQ which caught me by surprise as well as Mtume being the SQ champ just edging out Sue Raney. If you will consider sophisticated R&B/Funk/Fusion as interesting give this recording your time. SRV* I have heard this recording sound better then tonight. This is my original pressing bought new could be anything from power quality to room acoustics?

Michael Hedges-Aerial Boundaires Side 2 SQ Audiophile

The Alan Parsons Project-I Robot Side 1 SQ Audiophile

The Black Sorrows-Hold On To Me Side 2(record 1)

George Benson-Breezin Side 1 SQ*

Elton John-Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player Side 1

No Nukes-(VA) Side 6

Sting-The Dream Of The Blue Turtles Side 2

David Crosby-If I Could Only Remember My Name Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Since many have been playing David Crosby... so why not join in. I knew of the album but was not searching for it. This summer it appeared at a garage sale with a M- cover and VG++ vinyl(scuffs on side 1) it appears to be an OP? The SQ was forward and somewhat aggressive but very enjoyable. "Breezin" was borderline when regarding Audiophile SQ not sure if OP. SQ champ was to close to call I would rate both I Robot/Aerial Boundries a 4.6.

@tomic601

Thx for compliment. +1 for mentioning Tommy Tutone excellent songwriting for the "power pop" genre.

@spiritofradio

Mainly buying used or sometimes sealed original pressings from the 70's and 80's from all genres. My 90's to current music is 98%+ on CD which is fine. Many releases from the CD era 1992 and later do not sound any better on an OP or even when reissued/remixed on vinyl. The current problem with newer/recent recordings on vinyl is the availability(pre/back order) and then add cost/pressing and sound quality.

FWIW-Have about 1600 vinyl records including duplicates/poor condition and no longer want. Eliminating these would drop it to about 1475. An estimate would be I have played close to 60% of at least 1 side of my entire vinyl collection.

@spiritofradio

Thx for the kind words. "Soundscapes" has a very well balanced relaxed SQ. This recording is almost unknown to many audiophiles and collectors, $25 might be enough for a sealed copy?  If your not familiar with Yellowjackets "Mirage A Tois" its a "fusion" jazz album but performed in good taste with demo level SQ. You might be surprised with the amount of quality jazz in the 1980's...fusion/acoustic and vocals.

Ernestine Anderson-When The Sun Goes Down Side 2

Santana-Lotus(Mo Fi Gain 2 SIJP 46-8) Record 3 A

Mel Torme/Marty Paich-Reunion Side 2

Gordon Brisker-"About Charlie" Side 2

Cedar Walton-Soundscapes Side 2

Joyce Collins Quartet-Moment To Moment Side 2

The Yellowjackets-Mirage A Trois Side 2

Richie Cole-Alto Madness Side B

Felt like a "Jazz" night I wanted to avoid the obvious! There is much more to ’Jazz" then Miles/Trane and Brubeck. All recordings were Audiophile SQ level with performances to match. Could not determine the weakest SQ recording tonight, but Cedar/Yellowjackets stood out and are easily demo level recordings.

Deniece Williams-I’m So Proud Side 2

Ratt-Out Of The Cellar Side 1

Tony Bennett-The Art Of Excellence Side 2 SQ Audiophile

John Cougar Mellencamp-Uh-Huh Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Pat Benatar-Tropico Side 1

Night Ranger-Midnight Madness Side 1

Ricky Van Shelton-Wild-Eyed-Dream Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Linda Ronstadt-Mad Love Side 1 SQ Audiophile

It was not planned but it turned out to be a 1980’s playback night. All the recordings were above average in SQ with Night Ranger being the weakest. Ratt was a surprise just missing Audiophile status mainly due to the VG+ condition. A near mint copy should qualify. The SQ champ was Uh-Huh a digital recording but it avoided the vocals having a sharp edge to them. Bennett/Van Shelton had that slight digital edge on vocals. Ronstadt was recorded with the JVC 3M system(Doug Sax) but it had a somewhat "hazy" recessed vocal presentation. Not what you expect on a Linda Ronstadt recording.

@sbank

Thx!  It's always a risk buying used from estate/garage/yard sales but at $1-$5 an album you have to chance it because original pressings usually have the best SQ. I even bring a small maglite to examine the record wear, it helps but there is no guarantee until played.

Supertramp-Crisis? What Crisis? Side II

Shakti With John McLaughlin-A Handful Of Beauty Side 2

Susannah McCorkle-How Do You Keep The Music Playing Side 2 SQ Audiophile 4.7

Jefferson Starship-Spitfire Side B

Dionne Warwick-Hot Live And Otherwise Side II

Rimsky-Korsakov-(MS 6080 Six Eye) Side 2 SQ Audiophile 4.6

Pat Benatar-Get Nervous Side 1

George Benson/Earl Klugh-Collaboration Side 2 SQ Audiophile 4.7

Very disappointed with the SQ on Crisis? What Crisis? It appears to be an original pressing its flat/dull sounding but I did like the content. Benson/Klugh and McCorkle are near reference level SQ recordings. I would give McCorkle the slight edge for sounding more organic(less polished) but both could be used as demo recordings.
