Been out of the loop a while. My NAD 7020 was acting up, and rather than getting it serviced (again) I thought I would retire it and get something new. My, how the market has changed! All I wanted was an integrated amp with a rec out, and there are so few in my budget. I tested a Marantz PM6006 and just did not like the sound. Finally purchased a refurbed Cambridge Audio Topaz SR 20 from the company web site for $425. It is working very well with my Linn Axis turntable and ELAC Debut 6.2 speakers. Tested them out with:
Blind Faith “Blind Faith” SFX “6/11/87” The Holy Light “I’ve Had It Hard” George Harrison “George Harrison”
|
Paul Simon “Still Crazy After All These Years”. Miles Davis “Seven Steps To Heaven”. Breaking in a new Marantz PM6006. |
Watched Russian Doll on Netflix and was inspired to play Harry Nilsson's “Nilsson Schmilsson”. Also, visited a new local record store opening yesterday and scored NM copies of Talking Heads “77” and Laurie Anderson “Big Science”. |
The Band - Rock of Ages The Maines Brothers Band - Hub City Moan
|
Deep Purple - Machine Head Credence Clearwater Revival - Green River Weather Report - Black Market |
AC/DC - Back In Black Billy Cobham - Spectrum Ten Years After - Stonedhenge
|
Had a great day at the Sunday flea market this morning. Lots of $1 finds:
The Winstons - Color Him Father The J.B.s - Doin’ It To Death Melanie - Four Sides Of Melanie |
Had a few friends over tonight. Played by request:
Fleetwood Mac - Tusk The Soul Stirrers- The Golden Gospel |

Been out of the loop a couple of weeks. My father-in-law died last week in Detroit and we have been settling his estate. He was 87 years old and a great lover of music, including gospel, jazz and Motown. I will spend the evening cleaning and listening to some albums he gave me. And I will think of him with each song.
Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra- Afro Dee Clark- Dee Clark Charlie Parker- Charlie Parker Memorial
|
B.B. King -Guess Who
Got a cheap FACMOGU Bluetooth amp and hooked up my old Technics SL-BD1 turntable with my Paradigm Atom speakers and an old Radio Shack preamp. Threw on some Martin Denny and chilled. Sometimes the backup system needs to be aired out. |
More barn finds, some pretty dirty so may have to invest in some enzymatic cleaner..
Billie Holidays - Greatest Hits Nancy Wilson- How Glad I Am James Brown - It’s a Mother
|
Captain and Tennille - Greatest Hits. RIP, Captain. Hope you and Super Dave meet up in the afterlife. |
George Harrison - Living In The Material World Third World - Serious Business Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup The Who - Who Are You
|
Going through some barn finds from this weekend:
Boz Scaggs- Hits Earl Klugh - Dream Come True The Mothers - Fillmore East, June 1971 |
Blondie “Parallel Lines” Miles Davis “‘Round About Midnight” first pressing in mono Don Shirley "Don Shirley Plays Shirley: An Improvisation On The Story Of Orpheus.” |
Finally sorting through stuff I bought on a trip to Boston. Got some nice Cajun and Zydeco. Just finished Clifton Chenier and His Red Hot Zydeco Band “New Orleans” and moving on to Canray Fontenot and Alphonse Ardoin “Les Blues Du Bayou”.
|
Pink Floyd “Dark Side of the Moon”. Have to listen to it every six months or so to establish a baseline. Just found a Winchester pressing mastered by Wally Traugott at my LRS. Nice sonics.
Promo copy of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention “Roxy & Elsewhere”... with one of my favorite Zappa songs “Penguins in Bondage” |
War- “Why Can’t We Be Friends” Test pressing of “ A Tribute To Woody Guthrie”
|
A fine day of crate digging. Scored a copy of Wayne Shorter and Milton Nascimentos “Native Dancer”. Beautiful sonics. Also listened to Lurch Records “ The Greatest Band On Earth”
|
Just came back from a business trip to Boston and found “In Your Ear” used record shop on Commonwealth Ave near Boston University...my new favorite in Boston. Found a UFRN pressing of Lucinha Lyra, “Mangaba”, which had some old friends of mine credited as songwriters. Snatched it up and listened to it tonight, getting into the MPB mood. God, I love crate digging!

Looks great! I am sure she will be very happy. I see she has the NAD 3020. I think I will steer my niece there if she decides to upgrade to an integrated amp. I gave her my old Lepy preamp to get by. |
Pulled out the Christmas music. Started the season with a Trader Joe’s 2018 Vintage Ale and Bing Crosby’s “ I Wish You A Merry Christmas”.
On a personal note, I had another niece ask my advice on a turntable and speakers. Seems she had a boyfriend with a turntable and she got into vinyl, broke up with the boyfriend and wanted to get her own system. We settled on an Orbit Basic from UTurn as a turntable, and Elac Debut 6.2s for speakers.
I feel optimistic for the next generation.
|
My niece just married a Jamaican DJ. Thought I would delve into some good reggae with him; turns out he is a fan of Kenny Rogers...so I am in the process of digitizing some Kenny Rogers albums for him. Please don’t judge me too harshly. |
Oops. Steely Dan - “Aja”. Darn autocorrect...
|
Dave Brubeck Quartet - “Time Out” Steely Dan - “Asia”
I got a great deal on ELAC Debut 6.2s from Amazon ($149!). They arrived this afternoon and I am breaking them in.
|
Grateful Dead “Grateful Dead”. |
Just finished up Beausoleil “Hot Chili Mama”. Tarbarnak! C’est bon!
Slaw, loving the Pro-Ject VCS. Really speeds up my cleaning process. |
Reubent, you’ve inspired me (again). I pulled out a freebie I got at a garage sale, Coleman Hawkins “Soul”. The sleeve was moldy and not salvageable. The record had a crust (!) on it, probably from being stored in a barn. Just passed it through the Spin-Clean and then through my new toy (Pro-Ject VCS) and I am playing it now. Solid VG. Enjoying the music immensely.
|
Reubent,
just found “After the Gold Rush” last weekend in a barn find. Looked rough, but for $1 I took a chance. I cleaned it up and played it last night. The platter looked VG but played a solid VG+. |
After looking at the previous comments, I may have to pull out my Rush...
|
Kansas City Jammers “Got Good If You Get It”. |
|
Boxer12,
Thanks. Been trying to hit the turntable for a few days and found a great stash at a garage sale yesterday so have no excuse to not indulge. Lots of 60s and 70s R&B and funk. No Icelandic death metal, though. |
Sorting through a garage sale haul today. Listened to “Diva - Bande Original du Filme”, The Temptations “Psychedelic Shack”, Marcia Griffiths “Steppin’”, The Last Poets “The Last Poets”, Charlie Byrd “Black Byrd”. Whew! |
Scored a few NM- T Bone Burnett records for $2 each at a flea market today: Proof Through The Night, T Bone Burnett and Truth Decay. Cleaned them on my new VCS and have been listening to them all evening. A perfect Sunday. |
Just picked up a box of records from a reformed clutter bug trying to get rid of his collection to make space. Fished out a stereo pressing of Irma Thomas “Wish Someone Would Care”. Cleaning it up and about to put it on. If I have time, Thelonius Monk “Solo Monk” is next. |
JETHRO TULL...Stand Up. Came across this gorgeous-looking LP at a flea market for a dollar. Diggin’ it! |
