What the heck is "reverse polarity" ?

I've seen this term tossed around here on A-gon a few times and was wondering what it means? From what I gather it has something to do with reversing the speaker cables, but I'm not sure. Is there any reason why you'd want to do this? What's up?

Scottie is at the controls of the transporter and he mumbles something about "cross curcuit to B". Most Trekkies believe he is reversing the polarity. As with everything there are dissenters to this point of view.
CJ and Audible Illusions make tube preamps that require you reverse the pos and neg leads to your amp, otherwise the audio will be reversed.

Clark Johnsen wrote a book called "The Wood Effect". It is considered by many the ipso facto of phase and polarity.

A good read, if you really want more answers...
