Is Zino Francescatti still available?
What is the best digital recording of Saint-Saëns’ 3rd Violin Concerto?
Of course, Itzahk Perlman is possibly the best living violinist, and his recording with Daniel Barenboim and the Orchestre de Paris is, at least on a musical level, exceptional.
Joshua Bell with Charles Dutoit and the Symphonique de Montréal is a good recording, but Bell’s intonation is sometimes off.
I enjoyed Renaud Capuçon’s recording (Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France & Lionel Bringuier) until the last solo note of the first movement. Instead of just playing the note, he did a dramatic slide that sounded like an excuse for missing the actual B.
Gil Shaham with the NYP and Giuseppe Sinopoli is another classic recording.
Any opinions are appreciated!
