Loved these speakers. Had them modded with ribbon tweeters. Got them for college graduation and my graduation into the audiophile world (from Bose 901's!). Moved to Acoustat 2+2's. Today I have my ultimate - Wilson X-1's.

I owned a pair of DQ-10's from 1978 until they were damaged in the Northridge earthquake of January 1994. I replaced them with the Thiel 3.6's, which I still have ... wonderful speakers! |
KEF CANTATA'S (B139'S GREAT BASS AND PACE THAT WAS ALWAYS MISSING IN THE DQ-10'S) REPLACED THE KEF'S AFTER 10 YEARS WITH VANDERSTEEN 2CE'S STILL IN USE TODAY. BUT I AM LOOKING FOR A PAIR OF DQ-10'S! |
Snell C4s, but have long since moved on to ML estats. |
From dq-10's to the servo driven the acoustat x.Still use the OTL tube amps from the x's to drive a pair of acoustat 2+2's in a second system. |
Legacy Sig IIIs then VMPS RM40s (But I still have the DQ10s and occasionally drag them out for some listening, and they still sound absolutley astonishing)
But if you want the ultimate step up, the RM40 is the ticket. I liked em so much I became a dealer. |
HI I FOUND A PAIR AT A YARD SALE FOR 50 DOLLARS IN MINT COND JUST HAD TO HAVE THE WOOFERS REDONE. FOR A THIRTY YEAR OLD SPK THESE THINGS SOUND GREAT. THEY ARE ORIGINAL WITH NO UPGRADES. |
Boy, I never expected such a big response! Thanks to everyone.
The electro-statics do sound intriguing but I'm worried about them shorting due to feathers and dander from my childrens parakeets, African grey timnah parrot, and the rabbits. I vacuum around their cage everyday but would hate to have the constant worry.
I will report in on the Apogee's and Avalon's a.s.a.p. as well as the Totem's and Triangles.
And, it was good to hear your support Nrchy. |
....sorry I didn't answer completely...I now have Infinity RS 1-B's..... |
In 1977 I replaced them with Accoustats X's |
KILLER SPEAKERS!!IT WAS HARD LETTING THEM GO.WENT TO DAHLQUIST DQ20,THEN VANDERSTEEN 3A,ALON11 MKII,VON SCHWEIKERT VR6 ARE NOW IN MY ANALOG ONLY SYSTEM AND ALON V MKII IN MY CD SYSTEM. |
Many, many moons ago, after having modified my DQ-10s with a DIY kit that was sold back in the late 70s-early 80s, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a pair of Snell AIIIs. As good as the Dalquist were back then, I thought that the craftsmanship of the Snells was out of this world and the huge soundstage was one to die for. I ended up selling those and bought a pair of AIIIis a couple of years later and owned them up until two years ago. I now own a pair Avalon Opus after being swept up by a used pair of Avalon Eclipse Classics that were bought right here on Audiogon. I guess I'm just a sucker for fine furniture. |
I just can't give up on "Dairy Queen." You have to love their consistancy. |
Replaced mine with the original Quad ESLs, Decca ribbon tweeters and Janus woofers. Now using Acoustat 2+2s with a Legacy subwoofer. |
Great thread. I loved the DQ-10s for many years; reconed the woofers and finally sold them on the net. After 2-year search, bought the Waveform Mach 13s after driving to the middle of Ontario and hearing them at John Otvos's house. (Got the next-to-last pair, before John switched to the easier-to-manufacture Mach 17s.) Still have the Waveforms and am not looking to upgrade. An outstanding speaker, and not equaled by anything below $15K today. (I also own Watt/Puppies, but only for home theater. Intolerable for stereo.) |
Regnar's website: dahlquistspeakers.com |
Apogee Mini-Grands, with JBL 250ti's in the interim |
Vandersteen 2c's then Merlin 4 b's and now Merlin Excaliburs and have not looked back. |
A store-demo pair of Quad-63's. It was the first time I had ever heard them and couldn't pull away. I wasn't even looking for different speakers and went home with them. Then - tube amps! Different TT and arm and you know the rest of the story.

Any more info on "Regnar"? Imin2u, good luck with the replacement/upgrade which I would think won't be easy. Maybe you should just have them restored?
Some of my best budding audiophile memories were hearing DQ-10's with Apt Holman preamp, Quatre Gain Cell power amp, a Thorens turntable with the Infinity Black widow arm and a Denon 103 moving coil cartridge, circa 1979. Later, I worked for a Dalhquist dealer after school and in the Summers.
For similarly open midrange and imaging, there is a recent thread on Apogee Stage speakers that you might want to check out.
Maggies, and ML's, IMO, are a different kettle of fish. |
Martin Logan Aeons. I had always wanted to live with a pair of electrostatics and they are very enjoyable. When I bought my DQ-10's I couldn't afford electrostatics. The sound is very open and imaging is first rate. There are so many choices it really depends on what you want.
Just FYI, there is an outfit in NY (Regnar) composed of old Dahlquist employees who rebuilds DQ-10's. I considered it but decided to go with the Logans. |
I replaced mine with Theil 2.3's. This was a definite upgrade but maintained the same sound characteristics which I really liked in the DQ-10's. The Theil's are very revealing and require careful component matching to reach their potential. |
