Victor tt-101

Hi All,

I just bought a JVC QL-10 and the seller wants to know how to remove the platter for safe shipping. He states that the platter does not come off. Anyone know if the platter can be removed and how?

Thanks

Yes of course the platter can be removed. The platter fits snugly over the spindle due to the fact that the spindle hole in the platter is tapered and the spindle is tapered with a slope complementary to that of the hole in the platter. After long term use, the spindle and platter may be difficult to separate. The platter has two holes in it to permit one to grip it. The trick is to use those grips to gently pull upward on the platter and then very gently tap the tip of the spindle with a small mallet, so as to disengage the two. "Gently" is the operative word. I would also recommend using a piece of hardwood or hard rubber, for a mallet. The point is there are no screws or secret levers or anything holding the platter to the spindle, just gravity and the very accurate machining of the mating between the platter hole the spindle. I hope the seller is a sensitive soul.

Like @lewm said. for old TT's, I usually pull up with my fingers in the holes and put my thumbs on spindle to create enough resistance to free the platter. I would encourage the seller to try a little harder with care.

I’ve had my TT101 platter off no more than 2 years ago and yet it’s pretty frozen to the spindle. Perhaps pressing down on spindle while lifting the platter would actually work. Without the need for a mallet, that is.

Thanks all! I contacted with those instructions. I even sent him a picture of me taking off the platter on my TT-71. I thought for some reason the 101 might have a fancy lock switch of the sort. I hope the seller is gentle. I instructed him on how to package the turntable properly, which includes taking the platter off, as he was a little nervous. I think he was use to belt drives.
