About 5 years ago i bought a pair of the big D-2's .... MTM center section and (4) 6.5 inch woofers each side. Tyler was a super nice guy to work with, and we worked out a great looking veneer selection. The speakers looked fantastic. But i simply could not live with them.
The mid bass had a phasey character to it, and the tweeters were very harsh. I even padded them down with a 1 ohm resister, at Tyler's recommendation. I played them heavily for over 2 months thinking that they would break in, but they never did. Very strange that these VERY large cabinets had no internal bracing or panel dampening. I believe this lent to a woody, boxy character to the midrange.
This was shortly after Tyler had switched over from Seas drivers to "another supplier". I think that maybe the new drivers were not quite working out in this new design.... i don't know, but i ended up selling them lightly used, at a loss of about $2200. A very expensive lesson to me about buying large, new, unheard speakers!
If pushed, Tyler would have taken them back, but a 15% restock fee, plus $600 shipping EACH way would have put me in the hole just as much. Tyler is a good guy.... nothing against him at all.
To this day, i still have not found speakers that adequately replace my 25 year old, B&W 801 Matrix2's.
