Sympathise with you as my PU3 has sticky horizontal bearings and needs some tlc. However both PU2/3 are very difficult to service and you may find, even if you re-assemble ok, it will never be the same again.
Also on the PU2, you have the rubber sleeves on both shafts and these may become damaged on removal.
As the bearing housing is brass you would have to be careful how you clamp it.
I think these shafts do tap out but have not been able to confirm. Have also owned two PU2 Golds.
