Tune of the Day

"Blue Rondo a la Turk"  on the Two Generations of Brubeck album.  Wow.

There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8?  I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes.  This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it.  Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too.  It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.

You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All".  And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".

For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.

Anyway, that's my two cents today.

I am in Cincinnati, hello neighbor. I checked your links for Dawg Yawp. I gotta say it is different. Not bad even. They are very talented and very unique. Honestly, it's not something that I would normally gravitate towards. And I like a wide range of music. But I'm going to play it again tomorrow. Maybe they will grow on me.

Nutty,

Yep, it's a little off the beaten path. Not often you hear a sitar fronted band. I think it's kind of cool, especially because they are local and were "discovered" while working as bus boys at a local restaurant I've been known to frequent. I also think the lead singer sounds a lot like another local guy - Chuck Clever from Ass Ponys and now with Wussy.
reubent,

I had time to listen to only part of one of the video links yesterday. I will listen further this weekend. Thanks for the post!
arcam88,

"No Anchovies, Please"  How does one think up stuff like that outside of a dream?
reubent,

I listened some more to Dawg Yawp. I find them very interesting and certainly, they stand out from the crowd. I thought it could be worth buying (it is available on vinyl) but upon listening over Amazon, the SQ seemed too digital. Thanks for making us aware.
(Before I get any remarks about "too digital", let me explain. I have many digital recordings on vinyl. Some make the grade. Others do what some digital recordings do worse..... overall fatiguing to listen to or even start listening to, highlights the extremes of any frequency range as to make it unnatural, can be heard as "sterile or bright".)

slaw,
At that time with J.Geils I'm pretty sure there were various drugs involved in the inspiration for "no anchovies"😎

reubent,
I very heard of the Ass Ponys. Perhaps youve encountered Swan in your travels in and around Cincy/N. Ky?

It is available on vinyl. I'm going to pick it up and I'll let you know how it sounds....

Nutty,

I've never heard Swan. Hopefully I will cross their path someday.

Ass Ponys were a major local band back in the mid '90's. The had some critical acclaim nationally with their album "electric rock music". It may be an acquired taste for some listeners, but it is a favorite of mine since it was introduced.

The lead singer and songwriter from Ass Ponys is Chuck Clever. He's co-lead of the local band Wussy who have received considerable nation acclaim.

Nutty and All,

Here’s another local N. KY/Cincinnati Band that’s currently touring and making good records.

Frontier Folk Nebraska

I’ve seen them a few times and they are very good live. They play pretty regularly at Southgate House Revival and will be there later this month. I saw them there last year the nights they recorded their live album. Looks like they might be down at SXSW right now playing multiple venues.

Check out "Desert Car Chase", "I’m Electric, Call me Lightning" and "Buffalo Summer" from their album "Frontier F**k Nebraska". Good stuff....

Snowy White, "Midnight Blues" (2012) played with Thin Lizzy, Pink Floyd
I found a great Live video for this one,

reubent,

Listening to Frontier Folk Nebraska now. Like what I hear! "Buffalo Summer" is a great track. Thanks for the recommendation.

Nutty,

Glad you are enjoying Frontier Folk Nebraska. It ain't folk, and they're not from Nebraska. :~)

You guys should go check them out when they are back at Southgate House Revival. Really small venue, up close and personal. Bring earplugs!

For another great local Cincinnatian's show, check out Adrian Belew when he returns to the 20th Century theater next month. I know you're a fan of guitar bands. He's a guitarist's guitarist......
mofimadness,

I'll see your 1975 Foghat and raise you a 1976 Ted Nugent , Free For All. Youl may remember Meatloaf lurking on some of the vocal work on the albumn.
The song is "Together".

@nutty...The Babys was the very first concert that I ever went to.  Thanks for the flashback.  What a great night that was...
mofi...glad you enjoyed the memory and the link. I really like the Babys and John Waite is an amazing artist. I always did like their Union Jacks!

Heres a one hit wonder. Shawn Mullins, "Lullaby".

Nutty,

"This Flight Tonight", in its original album version, as well as this acoustic version, is probably my favorite Nazareth song. But, it's a cover. Do you know who wrote it and originally recorded it?
@folkfreak

You win, but then, you are a folk freak.....just saying'..

I think a lot of people are surprised when they find out some great, well known rock songs are actually covers. Lots of examples, of which this is a good one. And, of course, Nazareth's big hit - "Love Hurts" is another classic example.
follfreak, reubent,

Thanks for the intel on Joni Mitchell. ghosthouse also told me about her original version on "The Minority Report".

Todays first is Neil Young, " Harvest Moon".
