Trying to get UltraRendu to UltraDigital to Pontus II via I2S to work

Hello all,

Maybe the group can give me some direction here to get the sound correct. Just at the beginning trying so this may be easier that it seems. I have a Roon server running Win 10 and have been using it thru a separate Win 10 PC in the audio rack with Roon Bridge installed then out USB to my DAC and so far that has worked fine and sounds good. I decided to buy a Sonore DigitalRendu and UltraDigital to go with the new Pontus II DAC and use the I2S interface. Installed the UltraRendu to the previous DAC and sounded a bit better and worked fine and pulled the PC with Roon bridge out. Got the Pontus today and pulled old DAC and inserted the Pontus via USB and sounds quite good and works fine. Then tried to install the UltraDigital with generic 12" HDMI cable. Talked to Alvin about initial I2S settings on the Pontus and he said they are shipped with 000 setting. Went into the Ultradigital and set the dip switches to std PS Audio/Denafrips settings with only the switch SW6 (DCH) set to on all others off. The UD was originally set with SW6,7,8 set on all others off which is supposed to be the Holo Audio setting. Plugged in all the goods with a SGC linear power supply and I get fussy distorted audio and lower than should be volume. I have ordered a better HDMI cable again not real expensive but one recommended by several to use with I2S audio which will be here later today. Has anyone any info to offer to help me get the UD and the Pontus to talk properly to each other. The Ultradigital users, did you find the 000 Denafrips setting to work with the the SW6 only on to be correct? Thanks in advance Russ

Hi....

I also have the ultra rendu and the Pontus II. I have read that it is very complicated to configure with the Ultra digital Sonore.... How did you solve the problem?... Is it really a big difference between usb and I2S?

I will appreciate your comments...Regards

Another possibility is the I2S is not synched properly ,sadly there is no standard for I2S, why as like many things in Audio in digital no Standards where there should have been for years for example all recordings should have exactly the same spl level  when mastering ths was proposed way back in the 60s on tape

but no, why isn’t the -I2S -  HDMI all be a standard instead of several possible pin outs ? Which makes this a pain. In the Asss, but this is what you may have to do trial and error .

Switch everything off and unplug everything too. Wait until your new cable comes. I've had this garbled sound when changing from one I2s cable to another. Sometimes the DAC gets stuck in DSD or the wrong frequency.

If it still doesn't work maybe it's a driver problem.
