But I can say this: Cost doesn't necessarily translate to fidelity, or even accurate audio reproduction.
Look inside the preamp. Short signal paths, good quality/reliable parts, heatsinks, a particular method of acheiving quality amplification (such as LIFES from Luxman etc.)
