The Compact Jazz Collection- Yea or Nay

To those that see this-

I came across an add for “CD’s for sale” and the person is selling a bunch of jazz titles at a reasonable price. I don’t have many jazz titles so I thought it might present an opportunity to experience something different.
This batch for sale includes all of the “Compact Jazz” releases except those that were of various artists (about 77 disks).

Question- Were these disks done well? Production quality, transfer and the like? I usually stay away from “greatest hits” style of releases so I was hoping someone may have experience with these that can comment.

 Thanks!

They look like they are compilations of various artists, which suggests to me that the music on them and the sound quality will vary on each disc, and the artists play a pretty wide spectrum of older jazz.

IMHO, this is not a sure thing gold mine of jazz. If you want to explore jazz, and I recommend you give it a try, do it through streaming where you can sample all kinds of jazz at minimal cost and get recommendations for similar albums and artists for the ones you liike.

I agree with @tomcy6 that this collection might not give you the quality and selection you seek. There are a lot of good jazz stations online that cover a range of styles. I would recommend cycling through a few and make note of artists you like, then pursue those for CD purchases if you want a collection. My personal favorite is Jazz Radio Schwarzenstein. I like most of what they play and the audio quality is very good.

I ripped all of the issues I acquired back in the day. Of that I have curated about 20% of the tracks that I currently enjoy. They are merely a starting place for a collection, music over recording, mastering quality.

@tomcy6

Thank you for that, I appreciate your honesty- sounds like sticking to individual releases is a better bet

@fuzztone

Narrowing it down to 20% tells me what I need to know about that- not sure acquiring this many disks would be worthwhile.

@zlone

I’ll definitely check out Jazz Radio Schwarzenstein- found it on Tune In and Flux FM
