I would just point out that with driver arrays each driver need not work as hard so that might lower cost of driver needed but now you have many. Many ways to skin the cat. Tektons seem to measure well and please people including reviewers and myself at least for limited audition time I had. I look at it as yet another way to do things well but obviously with many drivers at a particular cost point they can’t be too expensive. Every company must be able to make a profit to thrive. Different strokes.... |
As always, with MC, its his way or the highway, insulting anyone with valid questions that challenge him. That pretty much totally devalues whatever value there might actually be in his "experiences", at least for me. We all have "experiences" and get to choose which ones we value. Lots to learn in this thread.....more about people than speakers. Interesting stuff.... |
When you start to learn about something, anything, you start with the fundamentals. Then you progress from there over time. That is how things naturally work. Or you can listen to some "guru" who skips the fundamentals altogether and jumps right to the "finer points" they have learned over the years so much better than everyone else. Oh, but YOU will bear the cost no matter what, even if your fundamentals are wrong. Oh did I mention you will take a pounding if you now try to sell those special expensive recommended "tweaks" that may or may not be so special anymore. Some need a guru. Others, not so much. Nobody needs a guru that glosses over the fundamentals. |
Tupu if you are a Plex user you should try the new Plexamp app although I think it requires Plex pass subscription to download. Plex app does not do CD resolution. Plexamp does. Also has a lot of nice features. I just started using it To stream from my music library and like it a lot. I’ve also been a Squeeze system user for many years. There is a nice video about it on the Darko site. |
So just to summarize, as I’ve stated from the beginning, I have heard Tektons (Double Impacts) and liked them enough to make the cut, meaning they are on the list of products I would consider buying. The pluses and minuses have been well documented here and elsewhere. Not much else to say in lieu of living with a pair. One thing I have noted recently is though they are a reasonable choice for use with lower powered tube amps, they are probably not the best choice in that regard, though likely better than many, perhaps even most, especially at the price point. Personally I would throw a relatively juicy higher powered SS amp at them. My existing Bel Canto ref10000ms would surely fit the bill as they do with my big Ohm Walsh speakers. I use a tube pre-amp in front and that might be a nice touch for many. Then again there is probably not a speaker out there that the Bel Cantos cannot drive to the max (maybe a few plagued with extreme low impedance and phase issues) so the choices are virtually unlimited with an amp like that. |
How is wanting to stop hate feeding it? But you are right about it being pointless. Luckily posts are free and it’s only hifi we are talking about. So the stakes are really not that high. I’ve already renounced hate. Not much more I can do. Would be nice to not even have to read some of the stuff that gets posted but that is the world we live in so it is what it is. |
I disagree with a lot OP says. I also agree with some things. Bottom line is I think Tekton offers a good value product that is unique in certain ways hence the popularity. I am big on value. I want to spend as little as I can to get as close to the perfect sound for me I can. Looks and size also matter to me. That way I can afford to buy more music and enjoy things more. Maybe even more separate systems to listen to than I already have. My eggs are in multiple baskets. It’s a disease! I even tweak for heaven's sake! |
Here is a summary of what I have learned so far in this thread about MCs Big Adventure: 1) The Tektons are big and sound really good as expected. 2)There is an array of subwoofers added so not only is there bass aplenty but it is everywhere. Am I missing anything? Oh right. MC is not just a happy camper but a very excited one. Which makes me happy because I like it when other people are happy. Cheers! |
The big advantage to large quality speakers set up well in a large room comes when playing large scale high quality recordings with a lot of things happening and a lot of dynamics. Things like big band and classical symphonies. These only sound "all there" with my large 12" Ohms. Not as much with similar smaller 8" Ohms or KEf ls50s with powered sub. Good but not the same....like being there. With this kind of music, only the big boys in the big room suitably driven can pull it all off to the max and its a total thrill when it happens. |
Yes I do recall my one Tekton audition at CAF a couple years back the double impacts were in a small hotel room not far from listening position but dispersion and imaging were surprisingly good for such a large speaker in tight quarters. The midrange was nice but nothing I had not ever heard before. I’m a long time fan of Walsh style drivers and the whole wave bending shpiel for coaxing great midrange out of a single larger transducer. |
Some people must entertain easily then it appears. Also I do not detect a sense of humor with MC since he will not even converse with me or 17 unidentified others at last count it seems. HE actually melts pretty easily. Maybe this could be next purchase/tweak: https://thesenseofhumorstore.com/ Just kidding..... cheap entertainment! |
What sounds good is 90% subjective. Also not determined solely by cost....not by a long shot. Given that, anybody can honestly claim any X sounds better than Y. However its just an opinion and everyone has one of those. Also sound is not the only factor that goes into most peoples purchases. Form, function and even aesthetics factor in. Tekton has a nice high end niche with good buzz here and perhaps elsewhere. Not worrying too much about aesthetics opens up possibilities. Size matters! There are other cost effective options, but many do not get much attention here on a "high end" site. |
John Strohbeen of Ohm Acoustics is also a musician and speaker designer. He says he tunes his speakers to sound like what he hears in prime seating at Carnegie Hall. Having been to Carnegie Hall, I think he in fact does a very good job. Taps off amps for different impedance is not about volume. It is about damping factor which may produce different distortion levels or characteristics. A higher impedance tap will tend to control the speaker transducers less loosening up the sound possibly with more distortion if damping factor is not above a certain level. It also depends on speaker design and will vary with that as well. Lower impedance taps will tend to control drivers better and lean towards lower distortion. Which sounds better? Only way to know is to try but technically lower amp output impedance and higher damping factor will tend to be more accurate |
There are technical factors at play here but not elsewhere? Bravo for those technical factors! You got someone’s attention! still seems to me if I have x drivers of mass y and all x work together the total mass at play is now x*y, not just x. But what do I know? Only that I have heard Tektons and they sounded good. |
I think the unique Tekton Home audio appeal is you get a bigger speaker that is more tube amp friendly than most for the price. Aesthetics are secondary though there are more cab colors to choose from than most. Size does matter especially when running off lower power tube amps. Otherwise there are many fine choices at similar or perhaps even better price points. Eric appears to have identified a ripe market (Audiophiles and others with tube amps) and found a way to offer relatively high value products for that. Bigger speakers for the $$ will always have appeal if done well but it is a niche market in that most people want smaller yet high value products in their homes not larger these days. Most products people buy these days are smaller, not larger. |
Break in - read all about it https://www.klipsch.com/blog/how-to-break-in-a-speaker spider and surround are two parts that benefit most. 2 points for millercarbon. |
