I lived for ten years in New Hampshire, part of New England region. Different people there, just as everywhere else. But, in some places and circles they do maintain the original spirit and traditions of the first settlers. I may not agree with everything but they have my respect. I didn't like Boston 'aristocratic' snobs, though.
Tariffs and sky high audio prices.
With the Chinese tariffs taking hold on 100% of the imports and maybe even on Mexico forthcoming, the audio industry is going to see another big jump in their sky high prices. Anyone making purchases ASAP to get lower prices from existing inventory before post tariff products enter the marketplace?

Nonoise, I just enjoy your colorful and articulate language. Problem is that in my impression most participants, whatever their political inclinations, don't care about anything but significant selves and their wallets. First there came pilgrims pioneers and other real people, then Yankee descended and methodically have been transforming the way this place functions. We have the result of that. It is not New World any more, it is the old one in a new land. If you want an example of repetition you have it. I suggest America threaten Canada with nuclear hit to get a better trade deal. We are being robbed by everyone. |
Nonoise, it's a good way to put it. So many Chinese people died in the war too. Japanese were savage, maybe at times much worse than Nazi. Now they are kind of nice making excellent steel and transistors and transformers and enjoying American jazz. I think, America should watch them all, there might be a repetition that must be prevented. Europe is quite turbulent at present. Maybe "awkward silence" is not a bad sign, maybe what we are saying gives them a thinking regardless of what they might post next. |
Yeah. Another point regarding Chinese that was almost untouched in this thread is that there are so many Chinese students in American universities. They pay full price, spend a lot on living, most go back to China with the knowledge how to compete. And some stay here to steal the technology. Of course, there are also true refugees and just normal people who can't tolerate that regime. But all this is not only American problems. Look at the UK and France and even Australia. What will happen if Chinese learn before the West how to control the environment ? This would become the ultimate tool. Big part of the destruction of Amazonian forest is because of the Chinese buying up everything. And in return they give us what ? S***, that's what. |
And with the climate change food is going to be more expensive unless major changes are made. On the other hand, so many people I heard of eat way too much, much more than they need. Besides other consequences, they spend a lot on food, probably three or four times more than I do, and then they think that $100 for a record is outrageous. So..I think we have the right to know where the parts for audio components we buy come from, conditions under which they are manufactured, standards, projected longevity etc. Then each one would make an informed decision for himself. If something is assembled in the US from mostly non-US parts it is not made in US item even if the company is US registered. If a critical part like tube or transistor is not American this is not exactly American equipment even if all the other parts are. This country became incredibly dependent on the others, both for import and export, and I think it is no go. Self sufficiency is more important than rampant consumerism. |
A lot of people reading this thread but only a few participate. Just like in reality - one does useful work and at least ten more live on it. And the one who works doesn't even get the biggest share. Anyway, tariffs are nothing, try to get guaranteed authentic Persian carpet. In New York City yes you can, a hell of a lot of money, but you can. I had to put this idea on hold until better times. Damn, it would look great on the wall between speakers and I bet it would improve the sound. Go for authentic no matter the cost and effort. And that is not Chinese electronics parts and tubes. They got authentic stuff but that's another matter. That's one reason why I am not interested in brands like VAC, Atma-Sphere, many speaker brands. First deliver quality and support your own people. I am sorry if more Chinese would be hungry, there are millions of Americans, including children, who are hungry. In reality of many this country is getting less and less fair and more and more poor. Think about it. |
Pay taxes, pay tariffs, pay fees, do whatever it takes to give away what you earn. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/05/irish-funeral-firm-rents-out-four-limousines-to-trump-for-1m |
Even without any financial engineering they know how to do things. Just recently monthly fees for maintaining business account jumped from $15 to $25 per month without any explanation or extra service. That's Citi Bank. They probably got millions of accounts like that. Chinese tariffs ? Other banks are doing funny things too, there is no competition. And I was thinking about buying some Chinese tubes and a few capacitors. Now I can't afford them. You see what's happening ? |
Anyway, are you going to buy equipment full of Chinese parts or not ? Or it depends, including on quality and price ? Mining practices, forced labor, abuses etc., remember ? Yes, you will. Chinese know it, they are clever, and they are cleverer. They also think centuries and millennia not short or even long term goals. |
Chinese will get us a free head replacement in no time. With Chinese heads. Then we will see things as they should be seen. And they know that no one is going to repay those debts, not a problem, they use money as a weapon and as a tool to absorb everything there is to absorb. So no, they are not enemies, they are a competing civilization. Imperial China is forever. |
Yeah, we better not go too far or the moderator will cancel this thread in no time. I'll just say that they are not our enemy unless we make them so. If we go into fair and unfair and how it all comes into being it will become increasingly interesting and unflattering to anyone on all sides of all oceans at all times. |
If Chinese seriously restrict export of rare earth elements to the US, directly and indirectly, prices certainly will go up because of that too. Tariffs and other interesting moves are also economical - ordinary people will have to pay more. One does not have to buy high end audio but everyone, well almost, buys phones computers and other stuff. Brave new world is not only going to be quite a mess it is going to be more expensive as well. Good luck, brothers. |
