Sony hap zies and Denafrips users….need help

OK it’s time to go to the real smart people for an answer. I’ve had my modded Sony Hap Z1es for eight years and decided to add a Denafrips Aries II to the mix via USB hub. The problem is I don’t know if I’m hooking it up right because I cannot get any sound out of it. So my question is as far as hook up, I have my integrated to the Denafrips via rca, then usb from Denafrips to Sony, is this correct or am I losing it..lol…If it is, I have no sound even though the Ares USB light does come on however, when I switch the RCA back to the Sony from the ares it plays just fine. It seems I am missing a connection but the Sony only has one set of outputs. what am I missing. Thank in advance to everyone,

Thank you guys, I appreciate your time, it was the usb digital output setting. Were a rocking now! Happy New Year.

The Sony HAP-Z1ES had a firmware upgrade several years ago that added support of USB output for use with an external DAC. The same software update also added support for a USB hub, so you can connect a hub to the single USB output and then be able to simultaneously connect to an external USB hard drive, an USB DAC, and a USB CDROM drive for direct ripping. You must make two changes for the Sony USB output to work. First, in the 'Settings' - 'Audio settings' sub-menu, you must set 'USB Digital Output' to 'Auto' and Second you must set 'DSD Output (DoP) to 'On'. I've heard that there are issues using the USB output with certain DACs, not sure what causes the incompatibility.

You have to select the USB output in the settings option on the Sony player. I think it's settings > audio > USB digital output.

If you don't see these options on your Sony player that means you don't have the latest firmware. Do a firmware update and you will see the selection.

I don’t believe your Sony player has usb out, does it?  The usb is for adding storage.
