Shunyata Combo Offer - Opinions Please

I have an offer from my dealer: a late-production Shunyata Hydra 8 and late-production 20A Python Helix both for $1,700 out the door. These were late production runs right before Shunyata went to Hydra 8 II and Python CX.

I have a 5+ year relationship with this guy, have never thought for a moment he has ever tried to "hustle" me, he moves alot of Shunyata product and is in regular contact with Caelin and Grant. In other words, I trust his "late" production run comments.

This combo offer would replace my existing Hydra 6 and 20A Flavor 4 with Furutech FI25R connectors. My source components (CDT, DAC, line stage and phono stage) are plugged into this arrangement. Monoblocks are on separate Hydra 2 PLCs.

I have read on this forum that (1) there is often a Synergy (yes, with a capital S) among Shuynata products making a Shunyata/Shunyata combo a bit "more" than a Shunyata/Brand X combo; and (2) the Hydra 8 is much more than just one additional duplex outlet over the Hydra 6/4/2, which are basically the same except for number of outlets.

I also understand that late model Hydra 8s can be upgraded to Hydra 8 II for $600, while earlier run Hydra 8s are $1,100.

Anyone care to comment? Worth a test drive? Don't waste my time?

Best.

Certainly sounds like it would be worth a test drive. There is no substitute for listening in your own room with your own ears.

Cheers,
John
Thanks for the responses. I certainly trust my dealer - no doubt.

I definitely plan to hang on to the two Hydra 2 PLCs I have - they fit my needs.

My post was more to seek opinions re: whether a late model Hydra 8 plus a late model 20A Python Helix is a step-up for me compared to a four year old Hydra 6 plus a four year old 20A VH Audio Flavor 4 with Furutech FI-25R connectors. This PLC is for my source components.

I can certainly test drive it and will. First, I just wanted to get opinions whether or not it was even worth exploring.

Best.
If they are NOS then that is a good deal. Even purchasing used here it would be tough to find that combo for less money. Probably not impossible, but difficult, and they wouldn't be brand new would they. By the way there was a significant difference between the Hydra Two, and the Hydra-6 and 4, that allowed the 2 to be better for use with high powered amps. If I were you I would hang on to the Hydra-2 you own for your power amp(s).

This is a better answer to your question than one you will get from someone you don't know/trust.Just a thought.
