Right Channel Hum on my VPI Scoutmaster

I was wondering is it possible to damage a high output moving coil cartridge by leaving your stereo system powered up while you're exchanging VPI armwands. I had the volume turned down while doing this. I was trying a new cartridge that I've discovered has a hum on the right channel. I'm not certain this hum was always there or whether i caused it by not powering down my system. The cartridge has been tried on two different tonearms on two different turntables, and the hum is the same on both, making me suspect a cartridge problem. Any input would be appreciated?. Thanks

Did you switch leads on the cartridge to see if the hum switched to the left channel?
Switch white with red and blue with green, if the hum goes to the left channel the cartridge would seem to be damaged.
I would say that yes it is very possible, even though you turned down the volume the junction box is still hot.

What do you mean by hot? The only electricity that runs through it comes from the phono cartridge itself.
I don't know for sure but I would think that since the junction box is hooked up to the preamp it would have a signal
