Muted hi freq from Magnepan 1.7

I own a pair of 1.7’s that seem to sound muted in the hi frequencies. The cymbals are there but not as pronounced as I would expect. It’s happening on all my playback from mostly red book CDs.

my system is modest

ARC SP 9 mk2, Odyssey Khartago,

Cambridge Audio CXC, Denafrips Pontus 2.

Hope my hearing hasn’t deteriorated that badly but during live concerts I can clearly hear hi frequencies.

Thanks

There is a common mod to jumper the fuses to the tweeters.  Magnepan is the only manufacturer I've ever seen to put fuses in the signal path to a driver (I admit, there may be others I'm not aware of).   IMHO, fuses have no business in the signal path.  You can find how to jumper it easily on the internet.

Of course you could blow a tweeter during a transient.  Tweeters are quite replaceable.  I treat most audio gear as consumable rather than capital equipment.

yes definitely bypass the fuses, better yet, get rid of that whole connector panel and install proper binding posts... highs will be much clearer

Thanks for the advice. I’m currently bypassing the fuse with a silver plated ‘ tube’ I purchased from a guy from Texas ( can’t remember his name ) . He’s renowned for modding Magnepans.

PM or call John Rutan (Audioconnection).

He knows Maggies inside out.

PM me if you need contact information.

Your silver plated copper should get your most of the way there.  silver can tarnish so you might take it out and clean it, perhaps put some de-ox on it.  Jerry
