Meridian 565...volume problems?

First, let me say I now completely understand why many told me that Meridian is possibly the most user unfriendly yet still the nicest equipment you could own.  Here's my problem;
I bought the 565 here at a fair price for a home theater.  It showed up in record time, cosmetically looks great, powers up, remote works, and plays with only one problem...the volume seem to be set.  Even though the display shows the volume rising and lowering, it remains the same...kind of loud for the room. I have read the manual and install manual to no avail.  All it says is push the red arrows to adjust.  Can the volume be preset across the board?
 
Any ideas at all would be of great help??  Short of turning it into a bbq pit,  thanks...
