LS50W Is the KEF App really that awful?

Going to buy a pair of LS50W.  All I hear is how bad the KEF App is.  Is an additional streamer really necessary?  Is it truly that awful?  I'd prefer to be able to just let the speakers do the streaming.  Will use Spotify Connect and Tidal.
If I were to also get the bluesound Node2I (for example) what would be the most effective high res way to connect it to those particular speakers?

I've used the app on the LSX which I assume is the same and it's pretty weak for sure.
The LS50 are Roon ready now far as I know I'd try that option before buying an external streamer should work great.

I couldn’t get the app to work when I brought the lsx home to demo.  to be fair I gave up trying after an hour.

I just stream Spotify Connect to the speakers from a laptop, phone or Ipad. It works quite well for me. I have only used the app for the DSP speaker settings and don't need it otherwise.
