Looking for a new DAC

Looking for dac recommendations

I have been slowly doing major upgrades to my system and now it’s time for a better dac.

Current system

Modwright KWH 225i integrated

Magnepan 3.7i speakers

Rotel RCD-1572 cd player

Will not be upgrading these anytime soon

Need upgrading

Schiit Modius dac

WiiM Ultra streamer (considering the Aurender N200)

Looking for a dac that will complement the Modwright and Magnepans.

Below is a few suggestions I have received but not sure how they will sound with my system.

T+A DAC 200

Gold Note DS-10 EVO

Laiv Harmony

Weiss DAC 204

Not sure how much "coaching" I can give re the specific DAC's you mention or sound signature.  However I am responding as I have Modwright components - LS99 preamp and PH 9 phono stage.  Like you my Modwright components are going to stay a part of my system for a long time!  My amp is a First Watt F8 and an Aurender N200 plus a Schitt Yggy LIM.  Speakers are Volti Razz.  I like the sound my system produces and know its.a combination of may factors including the tubes in my Modwright preamp.  I am enjoying the sound of my Schitt Yggy LIM but will likely be in your boat looking for a change in the next few years.  I have decided that I want to try out whatever DAC/DAC's I narrow it down to in my system since the individual components add up to my "house sound"  As a result I am going to look at vendors that have a trial policy - Mojo, Audio Mirror to name a few.  I also believe there are trusted dealers that may provide a trial DAC in the right situation.  My point being based on what I have read of your thinking above, if that your next step is to research a handful of DAC vendors that provide a trial period and narrow it down to a few.  This will enable you to further clarify your "house sound" and its specific to your overall system.  I have trouble expressing exactly what my system sounds like.  I can read reviews and listen to other systems but in 99% of the cases the overall system is different from mine.  Good luck on your journey!

If you’re looking for a neutral and clear white wine type of sound the LAiV DAC may fit the bill, but if it’s me I’d get it with their new DDC that reportedly makes a significant improvement for not all that much more $$$.  That you can do an in-home trial is a nice bonus.  If you’re looking for something still fairly neutral but with a little more warmth and meat on the bones I’d look at the Denafrips Terminator 15th, but again I’d budget for their Hermes or Gaia DDC for the same reasons as with the Laiv.  Two others would be Lampizator and Mojo who I think has a new Y DAC coming out soon that they seem to be pretty high on.  All of these offer very good 3D soundstage capabilities, which seems to be important to you.  Weiss and T+A may also be good but haven’t read enough about them to know how they do specifically for what you’re looking for.  I’d be careful with the Gold Note as it does seem to skew more to the warmer side of things that may or may not appeal to you.  As for a streamer I’d put the Innuos Pulsar on your list not only for sound quality but also for their outstanding Sense app that many feel is the best available to the point where some have even dropped Roon, which says a lot.  Just some thoughts FWIW, and best of luck.

I love the Modwright. When it comes time to upgrade my turntable, I will be getting the Modwright PH9 phono stage. Dan is a great guy and they have fantastic products and customer service.

Great system.  I have and love that Rotel CD player.  2 suggestions.

1.  Streamer.  Check out Innuos.  They have several models depending on your budget.  I have the Zen MK3 and it improved the sound of my system.

2.  Holo Audio May DAC.  Comes in different builds again depending on your budget and preferences.

The combo of Innuos and Holo Audio is an excellent match in my experience and made significant improvement my system.

I have a recommendation worth considering on the streamer component, which is Magna Hi Fi's Mano Ultra MK3.5. It's a two box system consisting of a Farad 3 linear power supply and matching box with the streamer component. You have options for the build including an upgraded  connection cable (mine is highly optioned and I recommend their level 2 silver cable if your system is sufficiently warm). It's ben a very significant upgrade in sound quality from my old Bluesound Node and I give it high marks. Hans Beekhuyzen has a Youtube review on it and uses it as his current reference streamer if you want to learn more. I love mine and it's worth considering. I'd also note the Weiss 204 is a dac that I really want ro hear. Have fun with your search for new gear.
