Jeff Rowland Model 6 or Model 8

vtin: the jrdg model 6 was a mono version of the model 2. the six put out 150 w into 8 ohms and 250 into 4. the 8, which has been around since 1992, is a stereo amp, the current version of which is the 8tiHC. the 8 is rated at 250 w into 8 ohms, 400 into 4. the 8 is quite a bit larger and heavier than a single 6 (a single 6 weighs 45 lbs, the 8 124 lbs.). since the eclipse classic is nominally rated at 6 ohms and craves power, it will be driven more easily by the jrdg 8 than a pair of 6's. it's purely a matter of taste whether you'll prefer the sound of the 6's over the 8. as a long time owner of a modified jrdg 8, i prefer its sound over the 6's and, certainly, over the more recent switch-mode power supply models. -kelly

vtin: you've started two threads seeking advice on amplifiers for your avalon's in the past week. i, and others, could write thousands more words attempting to describe the "sound" of various amplifiers in which you express an interest. but not even a million words, however well strung together, can take the place of YOUR ears. time to get out there and start listening. time to decide for yourself. -kelly

Haven't heard the model 6, but I own a model 8 and it is a hard amp to beat. Put it up against Lamm's, Melos, Symphonic Line and Herron's. Better for my system by far.
The amp I have is modded but has the original choke power supply, which is the way to go if you can find one and if you do not have a hum problem from line.

I understand that the Rowland 8 was produced between 92 and 95. I found a Rowland 8 with serial no. A800404, do you know whether this is a early or late model? Is this one got the choke power supply?

If the seller can't provide you with the information, I suggest you contact JRDG and ask them directly. They should be able to tell you about the design features of that particular Model 8, and the modification stage it has undergone, if any. I would check with the seller before you do that however, as the serial numbers are 6-character alpha-numeric, not 7 as you have listed.
