Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

yesterday I had the best day at the record store in my life.  I came across 2 Miles Davis Kind of Blue originals one mono, one stereo right next to each other in close to mint condition.  I could not believe it.  I do not think I will ever see that again.
acman3You beat me to it-Red Clayvwas my 1st pick. My 2nd pick is one of a handful of albums that moved me to listen to more jazz:

Well, you guys beat me to my two favorites!  Two more that I really like.  One of my favorite piano players that we don’t hear enough about:

One of the most insteresting CTI’s, imo.  For sheer instrumental ability, probably the greatest jazz flute player ever.  Here on flute and  piccolo (!) on the Sonny Rollins tune “Airegin” along with session ace Steve Gadd, perhaps the most recorded drummer in history:

...a moment for nice thoughts and wishes. Do not be stressed since whenever you feel like that, just remember that stressed means desserts spelled backwards.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Great clips all; thank you!

Not exactly your typical “sleigh ride” kind of vibe, but one leaning more to the serious side of Christmas.  One of my favorite Christmas song renditions. For me, McCoy’s playing simulates the way a composer uses an orchestra in its sheer size, weight and variety of color. Amazing playing:

My favorite current jazz clarinetist. Sleigh ride time; or, at least a stroll 😊:

Even when his voice is not having a particularly good day, the singing and story telling is wonderful:

Merry Christmas everyone!

acman, you post many links which I enjoy.  But that Gene Ammons just hit a special "groove".  I loved it.
Acman, I have several Frank Moran albums, this one is my favourite, I guess, with Kenny Burrell. Posted it before, but maybe somebody else will pick it now...

Also, Phineas Newborne was mentioned as well, but perhaps few cuts that were not

and few Christmas songs, but with very soulful feeling, from Kenny Burrell...

...one for a guy that mentioned Vince Guaraldi...

acman3We no longer have a good fm jazz station here in NY.  I guess you mean lack of support by the fans who purchase music or by music labels who will record and distribute their music.
I put my money where my mouth is and purchased several  Glenn Zaleski new cd's.

Nsp, 2-3 years ago I thought we were entering another golden age. I still hear it every time I turn on my Jazz station and am blown away by people I have never heard of. It is a remarkable time.

The only problem is if they are not supported they will have to get real jobs.
I'm a sucker for stride piano and so favor almost anything by Art Hodes and "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now" in particular. Vince Guaraldi on "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing" is a piece a go to again and again. (Guaraldi described himself as a "reformed boogie-woogie piano player," which is close enough to stride for me.)
acman3Liked the piano player you posted recently, Glenn Zaleski. The drummer was a little too busy on the first cut for my taste. I'm going to buy a couple of his cd's but not with that drummer. Also liked J Kreisberg cuts. With young guys like these two ,the future of jazz is good.
pryso, thank you for that, it made my day. So many of the people I listen to are in that piece.
Well Done.

Anything Bill Evans is sublime. This is what made him Great!

Happy Listening!
Jazz is like everything else on the planet, if you don't know how you got here you don't know where you are going .Not a good thing .
There has been a bit of discussion on this site about the value of new artists and current direction for jazz.

I just received this link from a friend.  It is a PBS special which addresses this issue.  It runs nearly 1 1/2 hours so I've not watched it myself yet.  But knowing some others may be interested I wanted to offer it right away.

Schubert, I got the Oded Tzur music from another thread. Recommendation came from Wspohn.
Some things new, and some old. For those who don’t bother reading Stereophile, here is their primary jazz reviewer’s list of top albums for 2018.

Thanks for the T Bennett cuts, especially the Bennett/Evans. I need to dig out that lp and give it a listen. Two words come to mind: exquisite and sublime. And that pertains to both of them. The first cut was a new one I never heard before.
