Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

The Jazz world is a small one, so while I probably make too much of these connections and “coincidences”, I find them interesting nonetheless.

Schubert, George Cables is indeed the consummate (😉) musician; wonderful player.  The first time I heard him play was back in the late 70s at the Village Vanguard with Dexter Gordon not long after Dexter made his heralded comeback and return from Europe.  Very memorable performances.  This was the quartet:

In that same club, around the same time, is when I first heard Jim McNeely, the arranger and conductor for Liz Wright and on the nice clip you posted.  He was the pianist and composer in residence for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (previously the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band) during their transitional period after Mel Lewis’ (and Thad Jones’) passing.  Definitely one to put on our list of great arrangers:

that VSOP 1986 video with Joe Henderson was great. Intense solos. "Eye of the hurricane" indeed!!   Do you or anyone know if that group was recorded and has a CD available?

nsp, you got that right !  I was stuck by that waiting for something that never

happened . Cables  is /was a superb musician .I want to say " consumate"
musician but I forgot how to spell it -LOL
A very nice rendition of "Summertime" from a lovely lady who knows how to sing and a band that gets it .

Same diva at Newport . https://youtu.be/0Yuf_HZgbE4?t=4

A great rendition of a great ballad more recently in Paris . https://youtu.be/5EMcG60myQw?t=2
Goes out with baddest jazz gospel I ever heard !
schubertI can't remember this version by Cables being posted before. Nice rendition, yes Cable's solo has intensity yet the tempo remains  slow enough to remain true to the song. Liked Hart's brush work.
pryso nice  to hear from you again. Wishing you well regarding your health, enjoy your new place. Don't be a stranger!!

mary jo If you can get a copy of "Straight Life" - Arts autobiography from birth to death written by Laurie and Art Pepper - I guarantee you will really like it. Its a story filled with many heartbreaking episodes but also many fantastic accounts of his life in and out of jazz plus his "redemption" in the 70's until his death in 1982.

One of the greatest books I have ever read and I really do mean that.

Pay no attention to that ridiculous price there are used copies available for 20 USD and less all over the place.

pjw, those are all great stuff from Peppe, love it.
I found few quite interesting stories about him. Wife Laurie describes her marriage with Pepper: “That marriage was the making of me,” says Laurie. “Some people go to grad school or join the Marines. I married a genius who valued and inspired me and challenged me to use MY gifts. We had a difficult, powerful partnership. I had to tell that story.”
mary jo that Art Pepper song is a great one. I have the studio version on his "Winter Moon" album which is an entire album of Art accompanied by strings.

The song "Prisoner" was taylor made for Art. Beautiful yet haunting, peaceful yet restless, Art just knew how to pour out everything he was feeling inside out of that alto.

Haven’t heard of Badi Assad before, fro. Very interesting lady with a guitar. Will do some research to hear more of her music. I might try to steal some moves from her. ;--) Thank you for that.

Hi all, I've been away from this site for some time.  That was a combination of health issues, preparation for a major move, and recently the move itself.  But today I noted frogman's name among the Recent Activity below the Topics list so decided to check in.

Unfortunately what I found was extensive off-topic discussion and name calling that I objected to previously.  No I'm not the "posting police", but I can do without that.  International politics and social injustice are critical issues, but there is a place for that discussion, and I don't see it being this jazz site.  So I may check in from time to time but as long I find much discussion other than jazz then I'll choose not to linger.

Now just to make a music comment myself, I'll say I was pleased to see discussion on Etta James.  Her tribute album to Billie Holiday is one of my favorites.  Cheers!

Pathology: that's the study of disease; the science of the causes and effects of diseases.

In addition to prosecuting and punishing murders, they should be studied, the same as a disease. When there were only a few, the present system of dealing with them was fine, but now we have an epidemic of murders. A totally separate agency, in addition, to law enforcement should be set up to discover "WHY".

In a DEMOCRACY, every single citizen has a responsibility to oversee this form of government. The citizens in this country have shirked that responsibility.

As insane and out of control as things have gotten, many think it's too late, while others think, "It ain't my job"; but it is your job.

Presently, there is an epidemic of murder. There is also an epidemic of drug use, could they be linked? While I know those two items are connected in one way; that's the fight for who is going to sell drugs in a given area, that in no way explains all the other murders.

Politicians and corporations have colluded to make the wealth of this country theirs, they have even colluded to take money from us individually by manipulating the price of food, gasoline, and everything else. I gave concrete evidence of this in my last post. What are you going to allow them to take next before you get concerned?

Another good one.  Dr. John on piano.

I did fine the Etta performance on Amazon, it took some looking.

Thanks for the info.   Just looked thru all my Etta James CDs, they are all loaded with great stuff.   But no St Louis Blues.   I'll think about the ebay thing.

Cheers
Love Eddie Harris!  Groove meister and unique tone.  Never a lot of unnecessary notes.  The album version and a fave:

Probably Eddie’s best known tune:

Miles’ take on the tune:

No doubt this has been on here already . But to be this mellow and still maintain tension is worth hearing any day !

Thanks mary jo for my song and all the other songs as well.

frogman I know you mean well and I agree with all you have to say.

However when one member on this forum makes disrespectful and degrading remarks that are obviously aimed at another member, which clearly show the pattern of a narcissist, and is not done just here and there but constantly on a daily basis to every other member on this forum I can only take so much.

I hope these condescending posts by this member stop now for good.

Etta James -- St Louis Blues:

My exuberance ran right into reality on Amazon.  $95 U.S.

Cheers

Thanks a lot, mary jo , I’m 99.9999 % sure I got the most beautiful one !
"The music knows who you are and works with you without asking anything in return ."

BTW,  when that hand pops up on the chart, if you click it, that will expand the chart to give you a better view.

Does anyone know what a one on one correlation is? I'll give you an example; when the sun comes up, we have daylight. When the sun goes down, we have darkness. If the sun never set, we would have perpetual daylight. If the sun never came up we would have perpetual darkness.

More one on one correlations, the higher the price of food and gas, the less money citizens have for other things; food and gas must be purchased even before the rent is paid, those two items are essential necessities.

When the prices of those two item went sky high, many people could only buy food and gas; that meant they had no money to spend at the shopping mall, that meant stores in the mall went out of business; charts will provide a one on one correlation to this fact.

When the price of food and gas was "artificially manipulated"; I pointed this out, that's when "Deep State" decided yours truly was a problem.

Frogman, thanks for the answer, its good to know. I guess I learned something about your way of thinking as well. Certainly I would agree that is better to stop now (before would be even better,ha,ha)

Etta James -- ST Louis Blues

Wow!!   Never heard that before.   Gotta get it.

Cheers
