Is there a process to match a Cartridge to a Phono

What process is used when choosing a Phono Pre Amp with analyzing your cartridge spec. Are there certain things that should match up? What are some guide lines?

Restock, Thank god I don't make my living giving advise! At least I gave him something to 'think' about with a built in problem to solve. My misunderstanding is probably why I put my vinyl system in the closet, I could never get it to sound right! :-)
The other way round ;)

You have to match capacitance for MM and resistance for MC for fine tuning. Lots of info on cartridge loading in the Asylum and on Audiogon.
The capability to adjust the resistance (MM) or capacitance (MC) if you intend to fine tune your cartridge/system match is very important. Especially with MC cartridges. A lot of phono pre's, especially the inexpensive ones do not provide this. And, especially with tube units, make sure it has enuf gain to match your cartridge or you might be plagued by tube noise when runing low output MC's.
