Is anyone able to compare headphone surround sound to home theatre surround sound?

I ask because I have a number of different gaming headsets (the Astro A50 and the new Microsoft Wireless Headset) and I always feel like the surround sound through the headset isn't as convincing as it is when I'm playing without a headset with the same old 5.1 setup I've been using for years.

I'm pretty sure I have everything set up correctly, but the headsets make me feel like I'm listening to a stereo soundstage. Even the Dolby Atmos for Headphones and DTS:X demos I've heard largely sound stereo to me. Like, it doesn't feel like anything is behind me; it just feels like the volume is a little lower and the highs are a little lower.I'm starting to feel like a lunatic loading up several demos and games in the hopes of hearing a genuine surround sound field.

Other people seem to get a realistic surround sound experience with headphones, but I can't manage to get it to work for me, and I'm puzzled why.

Is there anyone that has worked with both? I could envision headphone sounding fantastic as an alternative to sound coming from the television, but none of the headsets I've tried come close to the quality of sound coming from separate speakers.

I'd be delighted to hear your comments on the subject.

I'm not sure I would want to emulate surround sound in a headphone. It was so long ago that I listened to a quad headphone, what was your impression?
@mahler 123, i ask the same question.the only surround sound head phones i can think of is the old school quad head phones with 2 speakers on each ear piece!
How can you get surround sound on headphones?  It’s b.s.  , as you appear to have discovered
