Hearing aid advice & suggestions?

My wife and partner in audiophilia was recently diagnosed with a genetic type of hearing loss primarily affecting the mid and high ranges.  It's bilateral and resembles male pattern hearing loss in almost all respects.  Hearing aids were prescribed.

Having searched the forums here and surveyed friends who've already had to go the hearing aid route, it seems that Oticon, Phonak and Sigma (Siemens) are preferred solutions for those who need moderate-to-substantial hearing loss correction and want better-than-average musical performance.  One caveat noted both here and by one friend in particular is working with a provider that is technically proficient with the settings and adjustments.

With that in mind, which of those (or any other) brands might be most versatile and musical?  Which models might be considered audiophile grade?  Is one brand better represented and supported than others?  Is Costco a reasonable source for a first-time buyer or is a specialist a better way to go?  Are there any sources in the Cleveland/Columbus/Toledo area that are particularly well thought of?
