How much gain are users of high output MC or MM, or MI cartridges using? Is 40-50DB gain from the phonostage to much for cartridges ranging from 2.5 to 5.0 output? Personal experiences would be great. Thank you.
I've used 40 db phono stage gain with cartridges rated at 3.5 and 5.0 mv, with line stage gains ranging from 12 to 21 db. Results have been fine in all cases.
I use a HO MC Dynevector20X with a Graham amp 2SE for MM or HO MC. My results are fabulous and leave me wanting for nothing. I think the carts output is about 2.5 MV and the phono stage gain is about 40 DB but look it up for exact numbers.
My cartridge has a 2.5 mV output, my phonostage has 42 db of gain and my linestage has 22 db of gain. This is MORE than enough gain, as I usually listen with the volume pot at around 10 o'clock.
Thanks everyone. Phono has a minimum gain of 42db and preamp adds 17db gain. cartridge is a Grado ref. 1, which I see advertised at either 4.0 or 5.0 output. Guess it will be fine.
