Dunlavy SCIV 10

Hi all,

This is my first thread, please bear with me.

I have to replace the woofers for my Dunlavy SCIV, it is a Morel 10" woofer, model name is not written on the drivers, but "Double Magnet 75mm Hexatech Aluminium Voice Coil - Made in England" is written on the magnet. I have looked around and could not find the same driver.

Anybody can help me out on what to do?

Cheers,
rush1
Check out Madisound . . . they have the replacements:

Thank you Ncarv,

I did check it at Madisound, they did have a replacement for Dunlavy, but apparently they do not have the drivers anymore.

However if I replace the Morel drivers with Scanspeak or Vifa (those that were offered at Madisound) do I have to alter the xover?

Cheers,
you are in a little trouble. The whole design of the dunlvay was based on matching the speakers to each other, so john threw out a lot of speakers getting a set that worked together andtested the same. To get the samne effect you would have to test the speaker you are buying against the ones already working or test a whole new set. Maybe you wont hear a difference but that's the idea anyway and the curse of owning dunlavy's.
You'll normally have to alter the xover unless the replacement drivers are identical to the original. Madisound should know.
2) BTW, have you tried googling the drivers' part No? It sometimes works.
3) You have contacted Morel, I assume? If not the actual driver, or an equivalent, they may have your driver's TS parametres.
4) Failing the above, try diyaudio.com; someone who has your spkrs may have measured these drivers.
@ Mothra; Whew, that's what I am afraid of mate... Guess I will have to continue my search on the Morel woofers...

@Gregm; Apparently Madisound only have the ScanSpeak and Vifa drivers, they don't have the Morels that are identical in my Dunlavy.
2) The thing is I couldnot find any part number in the Morel woofers.
3) I did contacted Morel but didn't get any reply and it has been some months now.
4) I will try diyaudio mate, hope can get some more solutions.

Thank you all for the inputs.

Cheers,
Check out Audio Video Logic in Urbandale Iowa (near Des Moines). John may have drivers for Dunlavy, as I recall he purchased a "bunch of stock" when Dunlavy went OOB.
Rush 1, be very careful about "identical" Morels. The point Mothra was making was that even finding Morels of the same model number may not mean a match. A blessing and a curse of Dunlavy's designs (Duntech and DAL) was the matching of drivers and tuning of crossovers with those drivers.

Depending on why you need to replace your Morels, it may be best to have them repaired if that's possible. For example, if the surrounds have failed, they can be replaced. But another caution there -- new surrounds must be the same density/weight as the originals if they are to be a sonic match. One who can do it correctly would be Miller Sound.

Good luck
@ Mcfarland; I will try to reach Audio Video Logic I hope John has an email so I can contact him. If I am not mistaken, that might be the store that I bought it from in the 90's. Since that time I was living in St.Louis, and I remembered I had to drive quite a bit to get to the store, if my memory serves me corectly.
Thank you for your input mate.

@Pryso;Wow... didn't realized that such measurement took place for the Dunlavy... even for individual speaker.

Actually the original surround was badly torn apart, as I had a long lapse of "audio". Then I had the foam replaced, however it is a different foam since the repair shop didn't have the original replacement foam.

I will try to contact Miller Sound, hoping can get the replacement surround.

Thank you Pryso

Cheers
Hi Twilo,

Well mine is a Morel, I wish I can submit a picture of it mate. I've never alter nor open the drivers since I bought it new in 1994.

Cheers,
Rush1, are your speakers SC-IV rather than SC-IVa? That might account for the confusion regarding the Morel woofers. I'm not as familiar with the DAL as the Duntech models but I believe Dunlavy made some major changes with the IVa which could have included driver source.

That dealer in Iowa would likely know, unless the poor guy is too busy bailing out the water. 8^(
Yes Pryso, mine is the SCIV, one of the earlier production of that model. I was surprised too that the drivers are Morel, since in many of the writings I read the drivers are Vifa.

But my tweet and midranges are Vifa I believe. I think Audio Video Logic is was the shop where I bought mine at. I really hope they are ok. Did try to email them but haven't got any reply yet.

Thanks Pryso.

Cheers,
Dunlavy used Morel for a bit then he switched to Vifa, then finally switched to Scanspeak.
Hi Tony 007,

Thank you for your clarification mate. Are you very familiar with Dunlavy? I just wonder if I do have to change my Morel to ScanSpeak does anybody have the diagram for the passive? Is there more modification needed for the enclosure?

Cheers,
Rush1, as discussed previously, John Dunlavy's designs required careful tuning of the crossovers to match individual drivers. This was important, in part, to maintain time/phase which he considered so critical. The matching was needed within a given driver model from one manufacturer, let alone when changing from Morel to Vifa or Scanspeak.

I cannot imagine it would be too difficult to mount Scanspeak drivers in your cabinets but it would also require a rebuild for your crossovers. Because of the matching requirements, I don't believe the crossover diagram for the Scanspeak version will get you all the way home. So again, I'll suggest you look into having your Morel drivers repaired. And as I also said, Miller Sound would be a top recommendation for that task.

Good luck.
Hi Pryso,
First of all thank you for your kind attention on my matters mate.

I did contacted MillerSound and asked about the drivers, but apparently they didnot have the same Morel driver. As for the surround foam replacement, they have not replied since.

I asked Millersound whether I can just buy the most similar foam and send them to me, rather than I send the drivers halfway around the world which I feel uneasy about. By the looking at their website MillerSound does seem to be a reputable company.

After your input and recommendation, actually changing the drivers is my last option, so I will send the email again then mate. Hope I can get a solution from them.

By the way, I am inclined to get an integrated SET amp, do you think it will capable to drive the Dunlavy?

Cheers,
Hi again Rush1:

Well, amplifiers! I can only offer my own experience. Since I've owned my Duntech Princess (a sibling to your SC-IV) I owned a variety of amps, tube and SS, rated from 100 to 400 wpc into 8 ohms. My Princesses are 4 ohms so they draw more and are rated at 90 dB. Don't be fooled. The impendance curve drops below 3 ohms at two different frequencies and that crossover we've been talking about is a very complex first order unit. The other factor, which may add to my situation, is that my woofers are Dynaudio. All this adds up to a demand for clean power. About 18 months ago I bought a pair of Halo JC-1 mono amps rated at 800 wpc into 4 ohms. My speakers have never sounded so good. Detail without harshness, extension, depth, musicality, warmth without becoming syrupy --- you can enjoy them for hours without listening fatigue.

A friend brought over a PP 300B amp, thinking with 90 dB they might work. Those amps fell on their face attempting to drive the Princesses. So I cannot image any SET will provide satisfactory performance, let along being optimal. Sorry, Dunlavy's designs need quality watts and a goodly number of them.

PS - The Miller Sound I recommended does repair work. I was not aware they might sell drivers. So I hope your speaking with Bill LeGall.
Hi Pryso,

I used to drive the Dunlavy with BAT VK500, and it drove it wonderfully, but during my absence in audio, I have sold it along with the VK5i preamps.
As I am starting to build up a system again, an integrated SET came in mind, because of the sensitivity rate, however I do put a note on your past experiences. The Dyns do need a good solid power to drive it but I don't think Morels are so much more easy to drive, unlike the ScanSpeak or Focals.
I will keep my eyes on powerful Solid State on the market then.

There is a Mark Levinson no. 23 up for sale in the local used market here, but I'm a little queasy whether it can still have a long life ahead of it. If I remember it right the ML 27 does have a good solid power in it.

I am writing again to Bill LeGall to ask whether it is possible for me to buy the surround and I will do the repair here.

Thank you for your input mate.
