Dual 1249 Tonearm replacement

ok, so I have a design for a tonearm that I want to apply to my old Dual 1249 (I have a Dual 1219 that I have a custom plinth, Denon DL-103, used with a Linn LK1 preamp).
I want to experiment with at least a 10" arm, maybe a 12" one.
I can make a precise plinth that incorporates the correct mounting position, but would like to know how much of a pain is it, to take the stock arm off and have the motor still turn? I know I'll lose any automatic functionality.
Is it also a good idea to turn the table 90 degrees clockwise to aid in tonearm positioning? Looks like I'd have to if I used a 10" tonearm because of the cutouts on the existing 1249.
Hope this makes sense :)
