Do You Unplug Equipment During Thunderstorms?

Yes, disconnect if you know its coming.  3 million volts is hard to stop but most damaging surges are a lot lower.  We have some sort of powerr event 2-3 times a month that are not 3 million volts.

Absolutely, yes.

Being in lightning alley, if you will, I will even unplug the system if I am out for the day and I know that storms are on the way. Rain, no. Storms that produce lightning, yes. 

Having actually heard two of my amps literally being sizzled while being broadcast over the speakers, as they were sizzling is a sound I wish on no one. That particular storm snuck up on meor just popped up out of nowhere, and I had just gotten out of the shower, as I was listening to music.

That one strike took out two of my amps that I had just had revamped a week or two earlier. Grrrr.

I learned the Hard Way.  I don’t live in an area with high thunderstorm activity. A few years ago there was a thunderstorm watch in my area but in my neighborhood it was clear and I saw no need to unplug everything, as I was listening to my system at the time. Suddenly I heard a loud explosion through my speakers and jumped up to shut the amplifier off or yank the plug.  Too late !!!  Both speakers were blown along with my amplifier. I was listening to my system at the time. Nothing else was damaged. The TV was ok along with my CD Player which was playing at the time. 
Luckily, I had good insurance specifically including my Audio System which covered everything except my $500 deductible.

Exactly the reason for surge protection. If I knew when a surge was going to hit I'd unplug ahead of time.  It's the one's I'm not expecting that I worry about.
