I read that center channel design is not so good, that regular speaker can be used instead (placed horizontally?) Since lcd/plasmas dont need shielding, is this a good idea?
Unless you can get the mid range and tweeter at the same height as R and L main then it is debatable whether you would not be better off with "phantom center"....
I have tried it all ways. No center channel, "phantom". Center channel below the TV. Center channel above the TV. My conclusion? For multi-channel audio, SACD and DVD-A, and for movies, the center channel is needed. For movies the center can be placed anywhere, but below the TV is best. For SACD and DVD-A place the speaker at the same height as the Left and Right main speakers.
yopu get proper video dispersion with center channel and not third LCR.But for music you might want regular.I have heard many processors and most 3 ch or 5.1 sounds worse than 2 channel the exception being Meridian with it's "Trinuaral" processor which is front three and is great.Some company makes a Trinaural box but yopu can get a Meridian for $500 if old or if new and nest $20K for he pre.Newer and best isn't cheap.Now that DSP has come into it's won listening to a top of line powered speaker Meridian is about best hybrid system out there IMHO.But things are moving fast with all types of digital so maybe someone has come out with decent 3 front speaker processing but till recently most of it was gimmicky and one went back to 2 channel.
