ClearAudio Tracer tonearm tracking force adjustment malfunction

The tracking force adjustment only works clockwise (less force) and just unscrews from the end of the tonearm when I turn it counter clockwise.

This is a new issue; possibly caused by turning the knob too much one way or the other.

I don’t know how the mechanism works but there is some internal mechanism that moves the counter weight.

Anyone know how this works or what the solution might be other than taking it in for service?

@mulveling tagged you because I know that you know this tonearm - hope you don't mind.

Thanks.

@mulveling Thanks for the advice - I tried both suggestions and neither worked but I think I've figured out how it works.

My guess is there is a nylon piece inside the pivot housing that the rod threads into which pulls the weight section forward and it is stripped.

I'll email Musical Surroundings.

Thanks again and Happy New Year,

Ian

Sorry - I haven't owned a Tracer myself. Never had a problem with the Universal nor the Graham Phantom or VPI Fatboy which seem to have a similar counterweight adjustment mechanism. Sounds like the adjustment knob is mounted on a threaded rod, and it's not been properly secured. I might try either of the following, using "firm" forces but not enough to risk any breakage:

1. adjust counterweight all the way clockwise, and then tighten firmly so it has enough "grip" to move counter clockwise again.

2. push against the counterweight (oppose its motion) as you move the adjustment clockwise so the turning knob has a chance to better grip the rod.

Perhaps the rod threading was meant to have some minor adhesive which failed, but that's speculation. I'd definitely recommend emailing Musical Surroundings (Clearaudio NA Distributor) for their thoughts - they've always been very helpful and responsive to me.
