Classical "Gems"

I've a decent collection of classical records and cd's but want to expand it. Please add your favorites here as they come to mind. My records have been in storage but I'm bringing them out.  I'll be noting albums I enjoy that also have good sound; and will include details so others can try them if interested. We should end up with a wonderful list of Gems. I'm partial to Chamber Music and hope to discover much more than I've experienced. Cheers 🍻

Milstein recorded the solo Bach more than once. I have the DG version

If you can find the 250th Anniversary Beethoven box set, about 120 CDs, for a decent price, I highly recommend it.  I was lucky to buy it new for $450.

I just stumble on this commentary on youtube so well written and corresponding to my opinion about Liszt genius :

«

Liszt and Bach are the only composers that I come back to and always find something new. In Bach's case, it's all about the intricacies of his counterpoints and his unexpected harmonies that surprise me with each listen. Yet, despite Bach's accepted universality, there is something really special about Liszt. This man had a rare sense of high appreciation for music of all ages and styles, and a degree of experimentation and versatility that I haven't found in any other composer. He studied, arranged and transcribed the works of about 100 composers, from Allegri to Bach to Mozart to Saint Saens. He composed masses, symphonies, oratorios, songs, and wrote in a fairly large amount of styles. During the romantic period in which Liszt was born, it was the perfect time for compositional freedom and sacred/secular music could exist in harmony. His Dante Symphony comes to my mind, such an impressive and seminal style of composition, practically predicting 20th century "film scoring". And not only that, in his late years where he began serious experimentation, he used augmented triads as root chords, tried atonality, played with certain chords that almost predict jazz...  It's unfortunate that Liszt's pianistic flamboyancy undermined his massive body of interesting, profoundly moving music.»

One of the greatest underestimated works in Classic musical history...

The best version here ( i owned 4)

 

Liszt genius is at his highest with a mastery of the orchestra and chorus  and spiritual inspiration near Bach and Bruckner and Josquin Des Prez and Victoria ...

This is an amazing recording.  Sounds incredible on both vinyl and disc.  Masterfull.

Julian Bream and His Friends

The digital version of this album on Quobuz is awful. It may be that the vinyl is the only good choice.

It’s a very broad topic.  Internet Radio probably offers stations that specialize in chamber music as a practical way to explore.  Most of these chamber works greatest hits have many recordings, most of which I haven’t heard

Mozart Clarinet Quintet- dozens of recordings but try one with Martin Frost on the BIS label for  superb sonics 

Schubert-Trout Quintet  I like the Marlboro recording with Rudolph Serkin

Beethoven String Quartets I would start with the Middle Quartets (Razumovsky, Harp, Serioso). My favorite is hard to find; the Tackacz Quartet is a good alternative 

Beethoven Archduke Trio- the Sitkovisky Trio again on BIS

Brahms- Clarinet Trio and Quintet-Frost on BIS again

Schumann-Piano Quintet-Leon Fleischer and the Juliards

Franck-Violin Sonata-Perlman-Azhkenazy

Janacek String Quartet-s-Mandelring Quartet, because it adds an alternate recording of the second with Viola de Amore

Shostakovich-Eight SQ-Borodin Quartet 

Shostakovich Piano Trio #2 Stern-Rose-Ma

Bartok-String Quartet s-Emersons 

Bach-Solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas-Nathan Milstein

Corelli-Violin Sonatas. Manze

I could be doing this all day and these choices barely scratch the surface
