Christina Pulhar..spin it up
SORRY Christina PLUHAR, I mis-spelled her last name initially.
I did a search for Christina Pluhar here on A-gon and got just a few hits so I thought I’d toss this up. I stumbled across Christina while doing a search for classical guitar on Qobuz. She’s a theorbist. A theorbo is a member of the Lute family. Who knew? (not I)
Spin up her album(and crank up your system):

..and there’s a whole lot more.
It’s sort of classical meets gypsy jazz(though I’m sure gypsy jazz evolved in the other direction) and made for nice audio systems. If you ever tapped your toe to the music and spirit from the movie Master and Commander..you’ll like this.

Been listening through her (and L'Arpeggiata, the ensemble she she assembled in 2000) catalog. Lots of exceptional music. so far, listened to: Ciaccone, Bergamasche e un po’ di Follie (excellent) Monteverdi: Teatro d'amore (very good) Music for a While - Improvisations on Purcell (excellent) Via Crucis (excellent) Terra Mater (very good) Handel goes Wild (excellent) Alla Napoletana (excellent) Pluhar: Orfeo Chaman (not great for me) Los Pajaros Perdidos (not great for me) Antidotum Tarantulae (not great for me) ...and I have quite a few to go.. I've listened to quite a bit of Jordi Savall & Montserrat Figueras and El Cant de la Sibilla in particular. Wonderful music.
I'd be interested if anyone had any additional, similar suggestions of early music. |
