Changing the base plate of Garrard 301?

I've a Garrard 301 that is operating very nicely, but whose base plate is not in good condition (chips, dustbug mark, etc.). A while back I bought a mint 301 base plate from England and now want to switch the two. Comparing the underneath of each, they appear identical.

Has anyone done this? Is it tricky to do? Any suggestions, things I should look out for?
