I am not very big on tweaks, but before you sell the Oppo, try placing a Vibrapod under each foot. I think I used a Vibrapod 3. It made a very large improvement in the overall tonality of the Oppo. Much fuller and more harmonically complete. I don't use aftermarket footers under any of my gear and I don't even know why I tried this, but I did and it worked. So that's it. Not really an answer to your question, but I thought it might be useful before you sold.
Cashing In My OPPO Chips
Seeing what used OPPO UDP-205 are selling for, I’m considering selling mine and using the proceeds to buy a streamer/DAC - like the AURALIC ALTAIR G1 or Brooklyn Bridge. I bought the OPPO primarily for audio, but I do enjoyed the top notch blu-ray video. The SQ from the OPPO is good, but I’m hoping for something better.
Streaming is the direction I want to go for digital, but I’d still like a good player, especially for my SACD collection. My question is, would a mid-level blu-ray player - like a $500-$600 Sony or Yamaha - running through the Altair G1 - or something in that price range, be an improvement in SQ over the UDP-205? My amp is a Krell S-550i - (which I’m not too happy with due to its cool presentation - but that’s another thread). Speakers are B&W N804 (circa 2001).Thanks for your feedback.

I had my Oppo UDP-205 modified by ModWright Instruments. It was a big improvement. The mod was not inexpensive, but it was worth it to me. https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=147477.0 I can play DXD and DSD512 downloads with the UDP-205. I don't know if that's important to you, but you owe it to yourself to listen to those formats if you've never heard them on your Oppo. |
