Audio Research SP9 MKI tweaks

I recall the consensus was that the SP9 was a disappointment compared to the SP6 and was quickly discontinued to make way for the SP10. Sell the SP9 and get the SP10. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!

Sp9 Mk III was probably the most disappointing component i've purchased over many decades in audio. This hybrid pre sorely lacks resolution, transparency, in this case absolutely true, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Other than trying various tubes, the only mod I did was an IEC receptacle so I could try various power cords, neither did a thing to help. Good advice, sell it, and yes the SP10 was/is a far better pre.

If you haven't already have your tech replace the electrolytic's (if any) in the power supply for reliability

Aside from that research the coupling caps (.47uf 425V) if you want something different (fatter/richer?) sounding than the old Wonder Caps.

I assume that you have already rolled the 6dj8.

I have to figure about the PSU for caps, never thought of those and for sure if replacing the old caps, which won't be anymore to original specs, can help why not, it won't be a bank breaker.

I too wanted to add an IEC socket but back in time my tech, another one, suggested to leave it as is not to depreciate it, what I'd do if I have the caps replaced is to upgrade the power cable with a new one and a better plug even tho I am a firm believer that cables only influence psyche not sound quality...

I understand the SP9 was a mid ground in the AR lineup, I don't think investing in an upgraded vintage would be much of a help for my setup, I rather make the best out of what I own rather than swapping, here in Italy the SP9 sell for 1K and over, I can't imagine making that money out of mine nor I can imagine finding an SP10 for a reasonable amount
