Arcam is a fantastic company, with some of the best value in high-end audio. In fact, their CD23 is the reason I got into this pasttime in the 1st place. Their receivers and players are 1st rate. I borrowed my dealer's AVR100 to run my Maggie 1.6s while my amp was being repaired, and loved it so much I bought it and still use it as a processor for movies.
The C32 is a very good pre amp for $2K or less. You'd probably have to go up to $3K to beat it IMO. Arcam tends to have a smooth sound, and does a really good job of bringing out the details. I can't recommend their stuff highly enough.
