I have heard this amp with Maggies and with electrostats. It sounded pretty good with the Maggies but thin and edgy on the electrostats. It was definitely not a good combination, as the same electrostats sound great with tubes or Pass Aleph amps.

I don't want to be negative, but just want to caution you about the Aragon. I lived with that model for a while and found with very high resolution speakers there was a persistant colouration that irritated me for months, until I took the Aragon out and the music improved. The colouration was almost undiscernible in a brief listen, but taking the Aragon in and out of the system enabled me to isolate it. It is an upper-midrange grain which adds a coolness and wiriness to vocals. Arguably, most solid state amps have similar traits, so I am not dismissing the Aragon. Just warning you that the Aragon is not perfect and moving to higher resolution speakers may be problematic. |
FORGET MAGNEPAN WITH ARAGON ! MY PARTNER AND I DECIDED TO GET NEW SPEAKERS AT THE SAME TIME AND HAD THEM SHIPPED TO THE FACTORY . HE HAD TO BRING MINE BY MY HOUSE FOR ME [ NO TRUCK] SO WE DECIDED TO TRY HIS MAGNEPAN 1.5/QR [IDENTICAL TO 1.6 ] BECAUSE MY SYSTEM IS FAR BETTER . THE 4004 DROVE THEM FINE BUT THE WERE FLAT & DULL COMPARED TO MY VANERSTEEN 2CE'S WHICH I AM REPLACING . THEN WE CONECTED MY NEW SPEAKERS APOGEE STAGES . WHAT A CHANGE ! FROM DULL ,TO THE BEST SOUND I HAVE EVER HEARD !! COULD BE THE ARAGON OR THE MAC PRE AMP THAT MADE THE MAGNEPLANERS SOUND BAD . NOT ENOUGH TIME TO TEST OTHER EQUIP. I ALSO HAVE A MELOS $6000.00 PRE AMP AND WHEN CONNECTED WITH THE ARAGON & VANDERSTEENS IT SOUNDED HORRIBLE . I COULD ONLY TAKE IT FOR 30 MINUTES OR SO AND HAVE NEVER WANTED TO TRY THAT COMBINATION AGAIN . |
@daveteauk you're shouting back at a 4 year old post. and at 1 post, looks like he jumped ship. |
