Best software for ripping cd's to FLAC?
Thank you. That is exactly what I was looking for.
Richard Gray's Power Co - ...that bad?
I have six Power Company's in my system as well as dedicated lines. The Power Company's were a more significant upgrade than the dedicated lines were. Guess I'll have to muddle along trusting my own ears. They haven't let me down yet. In my experi...
Aragon Amps any good for Planars?
I have heard this amp with Maggies and with electrostats. It sounded pretty good with the Maggies but thin and edgy on the electrostats. It was definitely not a good combination, as the same electrostats sound great with tubes or Pass Aleph amps.
Best Sounding Ribbon Speakers
The Original Apogees (the seven foot tall, 400 pound, 1 ohm amp eaters) were the best ribbons I ever heard. Utterly hair-raising reproduction of cello - all the bite and growl of the real thing. Only heard them once, about thirteen or fourteen yea...
highest damping factor amp
Perhaps the best little woofer amp ever made is the Electron Kinetics Eagle 2.
putting together a budget system
I'd go with Arcam over NAD, and JoLida over both. The Vandys are a great speaker.
How Cool Is My Wife!
Does she have a sister???
Speakers: all-time worst
In the late 70's I heard "Savard" speakers. Very efficient, very cheap drivers, very dishonest demo. They sold based on loudness - did not let you adjust volume so a/b was at equal volume levels. The demo'd against Bose 901's WITHOUT the Bose equa...
speakers bottoming out
Okay as far as wattage rating - perhaps a speaker can handle 100 watts at 1 kHz. That would be the thermal limit - any more and the voice coils melt. Somewhere in the low bass power handling becomes displacement limited - in other words, at some f...
speakers bottoming out
"Bottoming out" happens when the driver tries to exceed its excursion limits, typically (as you noted) while trying to reproduce low bass at high volume. For each octave lower you go in bass, the driver has to move four times further to reproduce ...
Best Tube Integrated Amp around $1000
Sorry for the double post - I refreshed the page and it posted again!
Best Tube Integrated Amp around $1000
Unless I am seriously missing something, the Audio Refinement and Musical Fidelity amps mentioned are solid state amps. The Jolida JD302B retails for $950 and is virtually a poor man's Conrad Johnson CAV-50. The factory Chinese tubes leave somethi...

What Amp will go best with Magnepan MMG?
I have had excellent results with a little Arcam integrated amp. Arcams tend to be warmer than most inexpensive amps, and while you are waiting for your baby Maggies to break in you can give 'em a touch of bass on the tone controls. Just don't tel...
