Anybody have strong opinions about the ARC ref 6 versus the ref 6SE?

I’ve been reading that the 6 has a warmer richer more holographic soundstage compared to the 6SE.

Has anybody else found this to be true?

Do any of you out there prefer the 6 to the 6SE?

I know a lot has been written but it is all a bit confusing

Thanks for any of your thoughts and opinions.

That's interesting because in that price range I thought it was considered among the best. No way can I afford a Boulder or D'Agostino Momentum.

My last preamp upgrade was from a Reference 5SE to a Reference 6SE. So, I haven’t heard the Ref 6. The Ref 5SE vs Ref 6SE Is a nice upgrade to the same kind of sound. But the 6 versus 6SE are one of carefully chosen internal components versus design change, and all that I know who have made the upgrade have said it is well worth it. I like listening to music, as opposed to buying and breaking in components. So, I would get the SE, and not waste time on analysis, sending in for upgrades… and spend the time enjoying your system.

If you want more info, go to the audio aficionado forum. Preamps like the Ref 6/ SE are average preamps among members… there are lots of discussions on the two. The consensus is definitely worth it.

I upgraded my REF6 to a REF6SE.  It went back to ARC just before the pandemic and then I moved, so i went 11 months between hearing the two, and the system is in an entirely different room.  That said, the system is clearly more resolving now.  It is much easier to hear differences between regular and inverse phase of many recordings.  That said, the REF6 is wonderful and a strategy of buying a used one (I did BTW) and then upgrading it at a later date, particularly when new tubes are going to be needed, is a very practical option.

My take with the ARC Ref 6SE compared to 6 was the foundation of the music with SE was more rooted with improved clarity.

We listened to Vandersteen Kentos, Magnepans and Proac D48

sources were ARC Dac 9 and Ayre dac QX5 20 balanced with AQ Fire

For me there was no going back once you experience the Ref 6SE.

  Happy New Year
