Thanks for all suggestions and comments. I definitely like hegel sound signature, but h160 a bit underpowered for atc’s. if ı can find hegel h360 or h20 as a second hand, I can buy it. Also, I found primare a32 power amplifier and pre30 for 3k$, they are 250 watts into 8 ohms, anyone tried these?
Amps suggestions for ATC scm 40 mk2
Hello all,
Firstly, I know some of you will say that if it is atc go with active, but ı went for passives because of money. Anyway, I have hegel h160, 150 watts into 8 ohm loads, it is generally good, but in some tracks which has especially high dynamic range ones, i feel it lacks some power to drive 85 db speakers. I know atc loves lots of power, so i m waiting for your suggestions. my budget is about 3k$. By the way I can use hegel h160 as a preamp, with a new power amplifier or a new integrated. Thanks.

ATC and Hegel can work very well together. But, you're correct, the H160 or the H190 integrated don't bring the SCM40's to life. But, the H360 integrated does. The H360 also has a sonic signature that for me definitely works better with ATC than the H160. The H20 power amp drives them very well too. |
Stretch a bit for a pre-owned REGA OSIRIS integrated amp. It’s a high end classy powerhouse Power output: 162Wpc into 8 ohms, 250Wpc into 4 ohms Analog inputs/outputs: Four single-end stereo inputs (via RCA jacks), one stereo record input (via RCA jacks), one stereo record output (via RCA jacks), one fully balanced stereo input (via XLR jacks), one stereo direct amp input (home-theater bypass via RCA jacks) Frequency response: 20Hz–26kHz, +0/-0.5dB; 10Hz (-1.7dB point), 75kHz (-3dB point) THD + Noise: < 0.05% (bandwidth 22Hz–30kHz) Dimensions: 17.1" x 4.8" x 13.8" Weight: 56.4 lbs. http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/rega-isis-cd-player-osiris-integrated-amplifier-tas-213/ http://audiofi.net/2012/08/rega-osiris-punching-heavy/ |
Check the Nord Acoustics offerings; they have amplifiers based on NCore modules within your budget. https://www.nordacoustics.co.uk/product-page/nord-one-se-nc500dm-mkii-dual-mono-stereo-amp https://www.nordacoustics.co.uk/product-page/nord-one-se-up-nc500mb-mkii-mono-block-single Or the W4S ST-1000 mkII based on ICE module if you prefer to buy American. https://wyred4sound.com/products/power-amps/stereo/st-mkii-series |
spitzer45 The ATC’s 81db sensitivity, -34degrees with 5.9ohms in the bass is not an easy EPDR load for an amp in this power region. As this tester says. Based on these data and sensitivity, if a listener needs to really exhaust the full potential of the SCM40, he needs to use a powerful amplifier to drive it but, also, one which will not be punished by overheating. You need to look at amps >150w @8ohms, and ones that can "almost" double that wattage for each halving impedance, into 4ohms and again into 2ohms. I think that Hegal is a bit light on for this duty. Maybe the Hegal H20 200w poweramp said to do 130amps!!! (peak for sure) Cheers George |
Manley Snappers. That will do the trick. You are correct, the ATCs need lots of power, but really they need lots of really stable power. I doubt if the Hegel is up to the task as you've indicated. I run the ATC 40 actives, so I know the sound you are going for. Upgrade the tubes through Upscale Audio and you will be in audio heaven. |
