Tandberg sounds bright.
I have tube systems in my living room and bedroom. But I have a Tandberg 3002A preamp and 3006A power amp in the den/TV room. I really like the Tandberg sound--it is a little dark, but rich and involving, and the system does a great job with DVDs ...
Who's the best blues harp player.
Sonny Boy Williamson II, followed by Big Walter Horton, gets my vote.
What songs do you never get tired of?
Dylan--It's All Over Now, Baby Blue. Love Van Morrison's version of this too.
Tandberg 3015A cd player
I used to own one of these in the late 80s. I really liked the sound--where others complained about the digital edginess of CDs, I found no such thing when using this player. It looks nice too. However, depending on its age, I recall that the 3015...
CAL Alpha burned down:what's next upgrade?
I have had luck buying CAL equipment on eBay for very good prices. So far, an Alpha DAC (for main system) and 2 Sigma IIs (for bedroom and TV room systems), as well as a multi-disk CL-15. They show up on this site too every so often. Good luck.
What early 70's rock bands had violins?
Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review, on the road 1975-1976 -- Scarlett Rivera played violin.
golden tube & k-horns
>>wouldnt mind suggestions on a tube cdp staying around the 1,000$ price range.<<For a new-production CDP with two 12ax7 tubes, the Jolida sounds absolutely great and fits your price point handily. Personally, I use the California Audi...
California Audio Labs Master Series
Thanks all for your responses. I'll get in touch with the sellers/buyers and see what have to say. Thanks for the offer of the pics, Rx8man. I've seen the unit, though, just never heard it. It does look like a "statement," doesn't it?
Beethoven String Quartets: DDD recordings....
I'll weigh in with a vote for the Takacs as well. I heard their middle quartets for the first time just this week and was very impressed--love their Bartok too. For years I've enjoyed the Cleveland Quartet recordings and am not about to stop, but ...
Happiness is A Warm Set of EL34's
Like Newbee, I've also found the JJ tubes to be a bit brisk in my Jolida. Not overbearingly so, but noticably when compared to the Svetlanas, which are warmer but with no less detail. I've heard that the ElectroHarmonix EL34 are most impressive. I...
5751 tubes -- Raytheon
Thanks for the response, Ed. I suspect you're right about them being earlier productions than the windmill types. And you're right about Sylvania 3-mica blackplates too. The Raytheon and Sylvania 5751s are the two favorite choices around our house...
CDP-Tube Suggestions
I agree with Rcj1231 who said "Sylvania 5751, triple mica black plate or Sylvania Gold Brand 3 mica grey plates. They made a big difference in my Jolida, nice and warm!" I've used both in my Jolida integrated amp and in my California Audio Labs Al...
Differences in sound CAL Icon, Sigma, Alpha ?
I had an Icon II for several years, until it started skipping, then moved to a Delta transport/Alpha DAC combo. When I had the Icon, I usually coupled it with a Sigma II DAC and liked that sound better than the Icon alone--primarily, the Sigma too...
DAC for Cal Audio Labs CL-10
You might try the California Audio Labs Alpha DAC. I use it with a California Audio Labs Delta transports as well as with a CL-10. It doesn't "do" HDCD CDs, but those CDs still sound better (warmer, deeper), to my ears, through the Alpha DAC than ...
Who has a modified Shanling CD-T100?
"Maybe if I can find a tube DAC that throws a wide soundstage?"Try the California Audio Labs Alpha DAC, particularly with some good NOS tubes such as the Sylvania or GE 5751 blackplate.
